I have been accepted to both UCSD and UCB (spring admit)
I have beeen not able to sleep the past few weeks due to this matter!

Pros of UCSD
- start in the fall when everyone is
- have close friends going there
- has the "college experience" of both a world class education and fun
- Seems more laidback, less tension, competition may be evident but also not too much as in a fiasco
- I love the beach there and its beautiful
- rank 37 in the entire world for Social sciences; which i plan to major in
- can imagine myself being happy here
- more space
- i can get a higher GPA here then berkeley. (for grad school)

Cons of UCSD
- I got into sixth college: a very far and seculded spot for political science
- political science is not as much impacted but they have one of teh finest poli sci professors
- hard to have office hours with professors
- does nto have the name berekeley has

Pros of UCB
- The best education in poli sci. ranked 2nd in social sciences after harvard in the entire world!
- Better quality of education then ucsd but oth institutions offer superb education. UCB offers a bit better one.
- has a name, as in well known through out the country.

Cons of UCB
- I got admited to spring admit so i would not be having friends when i get there.
- the major i am applying for is poli sci and its very impacted. very impacted!
- everone can do well on tests but the curve is unforgiving
- GPA may be low. maybe VERY LOW
- afraid that i might fail
- Hate the hippie town and area
- Bay area is alright but i dont think i can live there
- Professors dont care about you
- people are into clicks and dont interact
- i feel that i have been accepted miraculously
- dont feel prepared
- my parents want me to go there!
- no parties?
These are just my preferences!

Please help me in deciding!! I call out to the college confidential community for this! if im wrong PLEASE correct me. THANKSSS<33

Sounds like your leaning towards SD. You have more pros and less cons for UCSD than UCB.
Personally, given your situation I would choose UCSD. But, of course, I’m biased.

I’m deciding between UCSD and UCB, too, but I got in the fall semester. I’m leaning toward SD based on location, opportunities in my field (possibly marine bio or biotech), and the fact that it’s more laid back, yet still an awesome school. Is it true that UCSD has the most Nobel Laureates of any UC campus?

@simplysymphony: for your situation, i would say UCSD. you like the area more and have more pros than cons. i think you’d have a more enjoyable/happier time at SD. and for undergrad, the college u go to doesnt really matter as much :]

This is my same dilemna! I could have written this post! Except that my major will be biology, I am looking at becoming a Physician’s Assistant. Any other feedback from either Berkeley students who can dispute the opinions raised by the previous post… or UCSD students, especially majoring in biology or with similar career track that wish they would have done it differently? I am definitely leaning towards UCSD, but dont want to make that choice for the wrong reasons or too quickly, it seems that everyone is pushing me towards UCB and I am so resisting it! THanks for the input!

My friend last year had the same problem. Her parents wanted her to go to UCB so she was leaning more on Berkeley…

Theres a program of some sort where you can go to UCB in the fall… but not as an official student… I forget what its called. For housing, there are plenty of places near UCB. She basically lived in a boarding house this year. So she got the full college experience at Berkeley too even though she was a spring admit.

You are the decision maker. At best, we are the sounding board. And unfortunately the echo is not quite the chorus you may want. Its simply true that there is no CORRECT answer. The right choice for you may well be different from others.

Having said that, you are to be commended for some thoughtful research and soul searching. The initial instinct is to impulsively grab for prestige or the higher brand. Upon reflection, you seem to be leaning toward making the choice that both MEETS your academic expectations and is MORE COMFORTABLE for your overall personal well-being. That is a great test for any decision you make.

It sounds like the only reason you’re even considering Berkeley is its reputation. You need to ultimately decide if the difference matters that much.

SD’s social sciences in general may be 37th, but I know our poli sci itself is right up there (literally) with Berkeley’s.

If I were you, I would go to UCB for the following reasons:

1- When you apply for a job w/ a poli sci degree, your future employer is DEFINITELY going to look at the school you went to. So, if you go to Berkeley, you have the reputation on your side.

2- Your degree is not going to say that you got in for Spring, all that happens is that you start on semester after everyone else. You can, during that semester off, get an apartment near Cal and then take classes through their school programs, which, would keep you up with everyone else credits wise.

Those are just my 2 cents though. Good luck making a decision :-D

DUDE, as everyone advised above, don’t judge your anticipated college by prestige. Decide on your options thinking about the place where you will be HAPPY. If you are gonna do Masters later on, go to UCSD and then get your masters from UCB or Harvard (it is easier to get in as a masters student than a bachelors one).

BTW, I am rejecting Princeton and Cornell’s offer of admission to go to UCSD because I will be happier over there. Besides that, I will try to get my masters from MIT or Stanford anyways.

My major: Aerospace Engineering!

PS: about the CAl spring thingee, don’t worry its just one semester. I would second “Avib0y” advise though. I got into Berkeley (Fall) too. Congrats to you also.

in my opinion, you sound like you’ll be way happier at SD although you’re right Berkeley has a great rep. Iono about Berkeley having no parties/ being socially dead. Ironically, UCSD has a rep for being socially dead. Iono how true that is.

I have to say, first of all that as a UCSD student, I don’t think that it’s “hard to have office hours with professors”. All professors are required to have office hours and it seems to me that they REALLY want you to come see them - and often. I’m a social sciences student and I’ve noticed that the social science teachers in particular want students to come talk to them - about anything and everything, even if it’s not class-related. Some professors I’ve had even have their office hours in fun places like coffee carts and restaurants on campus to make the atmosphere more casual.

As for your decision, I always had one teacher that told me to go to the most prestigious school that accepted me, but you’ll have years to be at this school and the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and enjoy it. What good is the prestige if you dread going to school everyday? Have you gone on any campus tours? I would definitely recommend going to both UCSD and Cal if you can. I had no idea where I wanted to go until I went to UCSD and (this is gonna sound corny) it just felt right. I could see myself on campus and I loved it immediately and I still do…UCSD was the right choice for me, but I wouldn’t have figured that out without going to see the campus first.

Good luck with your decision (and congrats on getting into Berkeley - I got rejected lol)!

It is NOT hard to have office hours with professors, my Chem 6B professor held two two-hour sessions every week, and more during midterm/finals weeks. Professors have at least one-hour a week, and I’d say that not many students take advantage of them, so if you do end up going, you will be able to talk with your professor.

As for the GPA assumption, if you think you’re going to be getting a 4.0 at UCSD compared to a 3.5 at Berkeley, I’d rethink that. UCSD and Berekely aren’t THAT far apart in academic rigor. UCSD is still up there with LA & Berkeley, it just hasn’t established its name completely. Your GPA at either school will probably be very similar.

hi there!
so today i went to admit day… i got into 6th college and was a bit dissapointed since i wanted muir or marshall. booo.
i was quite suprised about 6th. the people there were super close knit! everyone said hi to everyone pretty much. the people at ucsd are not ugly…and also it was sooo not socially dead. everyone said hi to me and lots of stuff was going on around the price center. anywho as we were walking through the reshall for our tours at the 6th dorms there were some of these 6th kids dressed in 80s wear singing a welcome song to us :D! then out of no where water ballons came flinging out! ahahha it was great! the dorms were ehh but liveable…maybe for only a year though… erc had hella nice dorms but whatevss hahaha.
after the tour and meeting all the 6th kids-which were all super nice-i decided that i really wanted to go there.
not sure how much my input helps but coming from a girl who hated the fact that she got into 6th college to a girl who is now really happy to go to 6th… hope this helps;]

go to ucsd! i visted CAL awhile back and i hated it! it had too much of an urbany feel for me. ucsd felt more safe and comfy… and heyyyyyyy we might be dorm buddiessssssss
