Fencing?

Does anyone know anything about fencing at UP? Also, does it qualify as "different" or "distinguishing"? I'm not terrific, but am hoping to be pretty good by my sr. year to apply (going into my sophmore year)

are u asking in terms of being recruited because if you are...national results matter a lot

if you are just fencing recreationally, i guess it is just a good addition that is different as u say, but being recruited requires more that just high school fencing...u need to compete nationally

whild it'd definetly nice to be recruited, i am no where NEAR that good. i mean, i've got little to no chance, for the schools i'm looking to apply at least. i am looking to try my hand at a few regional competitions, though. i do still get points for being "different", right?

sorry, fencing is just not that different when applying to ivies. you have to be rated and compete nationally. have you done the penn summer camp?

upenn is super good at fencing. i'm a fencer too. i've been top 2 for consecutive years in the high school state championships and ranked statewide regardless of school and junior olympic qualifier, but i know that i have no chance of being recruited. it's the national ranks that matter. and even if you are nationally ranked, you have to get the grades first. i know a saberist who was ranked internationally. he was always out of town going to tournaments in italy and other places. he applied to duke and wanted to be recruited but they rejected him because of his grades.

Firstly, I hate when people call it UP. Call it Penn, University of Pennsylvania, hell, even U of P, U of Penn, or UPenn.

Secondly, not quite sure what you want from your fencing...are you hoping to be recruited or just to have it as an EC? Because in the latter case, Penn won't care all that much. And in the former case, well, you better be damn good if you want to be recruited. You have to be REALLY good. I'm friends with a couple people on the fencing team here and was really surprised by how accomplished they are already.

Ok. Definetly NOT hoping to be recruited, i just wanted to know how "different" it was, since it's very uncommon where i'm from. and excuse my slang with "UP", it can look a little odd. "Penn" is better.

As I said, it may be uncommon where you are from but it is very common in Penn, NJ, and NY.
