FERPA and records

If you don't waive your FERPA rights-what part of the student record (if any) can be sent by your HS to a requesting college? I know my DS HS makes you sign a form for transcripts-are there any other records the school can send (or discuss verbally - like discipline) without you waiving FERPA?

You may want to look through this thread. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/common-application/1013426-guide-ferpa-rights.html

Most anything is fair game. One of the exceptions in FERPA to the requirement of getting your consent is that one educational institution may reveal the information in a student’s records to any other educational institution to which the student is seeking to be admitted. Even so, high schools still usually get a FERPA waiver from you for records that will be sent and unless the disciplinary matter is something that involves a suspension or otherwise something that would be reflected in the official high school transcript, high schools usually withhold such information. Other information, besides transcripts and any accompanying counselor’s report, that high schools usually freely give if asked by a college after submitting the transcript is verfication of ECs, courses being taken, or other information you have provided in the application.

The Ferpa waiver on the CA refers to the student waiving rights to see the documents sent. However, once you request an SSR from your GC, he or she has a question about disciplinary actions. Some hs have a policy not to disclose (or only certain levels of infraction,) some expunge after a period, others will be forthright. Most adcoms put disciplinary info in persepctive. I usually say, speak with the GC.
