I'm from ffx county (NOVA) and last year we have had a grading scale change that has essentially made it a little easier to get higher GPAs. However, I am worried that admissions will undermine the grades from the last 2 years because they have been inflated and thus place more emphasis on SAT/ACT and other objective data. do you guys think that this could be the case?

I am also from fairfax county and while gpa’s have been inflated, I think it was right for this to happen. Other school systems have similar GPA increase. For example, before the change my highest potential GPA was 4.17 with 10 AP’s and 10 HN’s classes. Now, the max I can have with that same load is 4.5. Just getting .5 added for each AP was harsh. The addition of A- was also needed, because most schools use them, and a B+ in a normal country mean around 87% while in fairfax, it meant upwards of 93.47% one quarter in geometry. As a student who aims for all a’s, it also took some pressure off that each grade’s minimum percent went done by one, for example A’s set a 94% decreased to 93%. I’ve gotten 93.1 and 93.4 1st/2nd qtr in physics this year. It’s helped a lot. The pro-change people provided a lot of evidence from admissions officers that many schools just plug in the GPA without considering the rigor of the county or grade scale.

I’m way more worried about the fact our county doesn’t do class ranking. My counselor says a lot of VA schools really dislike that fact, and I dislike it, too. It takes away an extra factor that could aid me in admissions, although I can see how it hurts more than it does good for other students.

NO. This is how rumors start, so I put that in bold.

As I’ve explained before, the school profile explains the system in place and that is used to interpret the transcript. We all knew that the transcripts we’d see for a few years would straddle the two scales. That’s fine.

A grade scale change isn’t unheard of. It is not a curve ball for an admission officer.

thnx you Dean J,

I only asked this question b/c my gov teacher was talking about how this is the new polict being implemented in Virginia schools.
