I was really upset when I moved here because almost everywhere I've lived, a B has been 80-89, and A 90-99, etc. How do colleges take this into consideration?

I've heard that colleges usually 'calculate' their own GPA's...im thinking one generic one off your letter grades...how can i do this at home? My school also added an extra .7 to your AP class's grades btw.

It wouldn't make any difference, hoganwan. For one thing, grades are not static, consistent measures of performance. You wouldn't necessarily get the same grades. And your performance relative to your peers wouldn't necessarily be the same, either. This is why rank is such an important measure in admissions.

Remember that form you gave your guidance counselor to fill out when you were applying to schools? Right, well that form gets a lot of information from your counselor. In this information there is a school "profile" where they list what % gets the notation of an A+ on your transcript, how grades are weighted, etc.
Admissions officers have been doing the application thing for a long time - don't think they're going to let different grading scales and weights at different schools blow their minds ...

i go to Stone Bridge High School in loudoun.

after hearing that rank matters a lot....another question: what is a good rank to have? as in percent wise....stretching from a 10%....because i have a 3.8 and im 5*/442 :/

A good rank to have is something that's at least top 10%. Are you trying to say that you're ranked in the 50's out of 442? That's going to make things tough for you. Is your "3.8" weighted or unweighted? If it's weighted, then it's not too good. If it's unweighted, and you're ranked in the 50's, then your school has massive grade inflation.

hmm actually. I complain about that a lot T_T haha. but I honestly thought I had a low GPA and I still got into UVA Echols... and my GPA was 3.9 WEIGHTED... but my class "rank" was top 5% so...

So I imagine ill have between a 4-4.75 GPA weighted and aproximately 3-3.75 unweighted but lets say ill be in top 3% of class ranking. would university of virginia look at the classes im taking along with the class ranking such as the majority of my classes are AP and therefor more rigourous than normal/honor calsses? and take that into account with gpa?

Do you really think the admissions office at U.Va. doesn’t already know all about the grading scale in Loudon County? C’mon, they’ve done this before, you know.

Dean J has stressed time and time again you can not compare GPA from differing school districts. It is meaningless due to weighting, grading scale, availability of APs, etc. They deal with grading scales that you wouldn’t even imagine! As Sikorsky states, they are exceptionally adept at the NoVa area schools as they get so many applications. They do not recalculate your grades. They look at your GPA in context of your course rigor (which is taken in context of what is offered at your school), and your rank, with the help of the profile that is sent with your GC report. It gives your grading scale, which APs/IBs are offered, the GPA range (which can be used to determine rank if your school doesn’t rank students), etc.
