So, I've always kind of been into recreational ice skating, but haven't taken figure skating lessons or anything- and I'd really like to in college. Does Yale offer this kind of opportunity, and how easy is it for students to take advantage of? I know they have Ingalls Rink, but I checked out their hours for figure skaters, and they're not very extensive. Is it feasible for a full-time Yale student to still want to learn how to figure skate on the side?

I know there’s open skate but I don’t know about private lessons. If you have access to a car, I’m sure nearby rinks could accomodate you. CT is fairly rich in fig skating.

It really depends on what you want to get out of skating. For someone just starting up, Ingall’s is probably sufficient. There’s not a ton of figure skating ice time…only about 5 hours total a week, but they do have a basic skills program and you could take group or private lessons there. Also, most Ingall’s figure skating ice time is on the weekend, so it probably wouldn’t be too hard to fit into your academic schedule; and you could possibly use open skate times for more practice if you wanted. You also get significantly discounted ice-time rates if you’re a Yale student which is great because ice time could become quite expensive otherwise.
If you’re looking for anything much more extensive than a few hours a week, Yale really doesn’t have the figure skating facilities on campus to help you do so. There are a number of figure skating clubs and rinks nearby, but scheduling/transport/paying to attend sessions there would probably be a little more difficult but certainly not impossible.

@fuzzy we need to meet! I’ll go skating with you! I have to say, though… im kind of horrible. I fall about every 10 seconds.

Great Thanks for the responses guys! I’m actually going to start to take lessons next week, so hopefully by the time I get there I’ll be semi-decent at skating… transport would be a toughie. Hmmm… is it bike-able? :)

@cantwait: YES! Let’s do it Are you going to BD? We could totally meet up then or something :)

HAHAHAHHA OMG So I actually used to take figure skating lessons at a very very basic level at Ingalls Rink on Sunday mornings (Snowplow sam i thiknk?). I would also love to take up skating again :)

yeess maam! bulldog days! only 19 days away! woooot.

My daughter was a fairly competitive figure skater in HS. (Double gold). The figure skating ice time at Yale is quite limited and conflicted with her course schedule, but she discovered ballroom dance and loves it. Check out the ballroom dance booth at the extracurricular fair at BDD…it might be the ticket for you too. She had no prior experience dancing.
