Fiinancial aid question

Cornell does have international aid but it is VERY limited. (something like 10~15 kids each year get aid)

where did you get that info eos?

This is from the College Board website:
Financial Aid
International students eligible for need-based aid
Number of enrolled international undergraduates received aid: 240
Total amount awarded : $5,820,000
This means that each year around 60 kids get finaid from Cornell! Indeed the average package is $24,250, less than at other top schools, but 60 kids getting aid per year is more than what most (if not all) other ivies offer.

and considering that COrnells got a heck more students...almost 3 times harvard...that ain't much...bec most int'ls can't afford 45k anyways

could someone enlighten me regarding cornell's finaid policy towards internationals? on the CB website, it is stated that Cornell meets 100% need (i realize that it probably refers to domestics only), but did I hear right that intels can get accepted without being offered finaid?

its sorta like this...cornell's needblind for domestics but not int'ls
their ED agreement says tyhat under no circumstance will they give u aid...and that u shd be totally self funded...which in a way sends a -ve message to int'ls who really want to go to cornell

also, for RDs, thou they do give some aid, its after a long and convoluted filter process.

Some univs like UPenn even tell int'l not to apply for aid in their prospectus, but still give some LIMITED aid

So all hope is not lost from Cornell.

Even if a few opinions say that aid is bad at any school, there's always bound to be someone who got great aid and is loving it. Just wait and see before you draw any conclusions. Unless you get a letter showing you how much aid you got if you applied for it, then just wait it out and hope for the best.

Just some info on Cornell: Cornell is NEED BLIND TO INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS. Meaning that unlike certain schools (e.g. Stanford, Penn) YOUR ABILITY TO PAY WILL NOT AFFECT YOUR ADMISSIONS DECISION.

However, they often will not meet your need.
2 sources confirm this:

International financial aid decisions are determined after admissions decisions are made. Criteria include academic excellence, geographic diversity, and potential for campus participation and/or leadership.

From cornell.edu

And from personal correspondence to the Cornell admissions office.

I do remember reading that only around 10~15 international students get aid each year, but I also remember reading that 200+ international kids get aid at Cornell... I dunno which one to believe. I'll dig around more.

But you're not allowed to apply for aid if you're and ED applicant and International

Ok after some digging around:

Cornell has a limited amount of funding available for international undergraduates, only 10 - 15 scholarships are awarded to students in each entering class. The scholarships are either partial or full, based on the selected student's need. It is not possible to apply for financial aid from Cornell after enrollment.

from http://www.isso.cornell.edu/students/aid.php

Now I am confused as to which info to believe...

Basically -

You cannot apply for aid if you are an International Student applying ED.

You can apply for aid if you are an International Student applying RD. This will not come in the way of your admission decison. ie. Cornell is need-blind to International Students applyind RD.

Funds are limited. Those Intels who are admitted (on basis of merit) will be assessed for how much aid they need. 10-15 Intels on an average will get as much aid as they require.

Question : What happens to the other Intels who need Finaid ? They are admitted but cant accept because they dont get finaid ? Thats what it seems to me !

But the most important part of this stuff is this - Cornell is NEED BLIND to Intels applying RD. Which is a big relief ! That gives you a good chance of being admitted and a little less-than-fair chance of being granted finaid. But atleast theyre need blind which is better off than other colleges IMO.

Screw Cornell, Princeton is better anyday :)

Yes Kj, thats pretty much obvious , isnt it. ;)

no...if ur doing engineering (like me)...Cornell KICKS princeton's ass

there seems to be a BIG confusion here:

when cornell says they give aid to 60 people but scholarships to 10-15 this is what it mean:
the rest 45 get aid in the form of loans and grants...only 15 get scholarships

right, and now its all cleared
