File Sharing at ND?

i know it's illegal. I know that many probably find it borderline morally reprehensible. But downloading music is something that I do a lot of. Does anyone know if there are any firewalls on the ND network that would block filesharing programs such as Limewire?

I can't comment on any illegal activity but most of the programs that are capable of downloading such information are not blocked but are limited so the download speeds are rediculously slow. Also, the school doesn't monitor it but if you get caught you will get sent to Residence Life. That being said, there are programs that do not hit the internet but rather just look for files on the network. MyTunes is an example of this; it exploits iTunes and makes it so you can download people's music. I would not recommend any of it because it is illegal, first of all, and secondly because record companies have to problem going after college students. It is your judgement, not mine, but I would encourage you into looking into Walmart's website, for example, where you can download songs for $.88. 'Tis better to be safe and legal at Our Lady's university.

Kevdude, I'm probably gonna sign up for Rhapsody or Yahoo Music to go, so I won't get sued. Pretty cheap, about 10-15 bucks a month.

Are all downloads slowed down because of the limits? Or is it just for programs such as Limewire, Kazaa, etc? Because I often download files from friends or download Chinese songs/movies/TV shows that are not protected by any copyright laws. Would those be slowed down as well? If so, exactly how slow are the downloads?

Yes, those would be slowed because the traffic is filtered by the University. You can certainly do it, as long as it is legal you will not get in trouble, but when I say slow I mean slow. On a good night, you may get up to .2 kbps. Given the fact that I usually got up to 4 kbps on a modem and get several hundred on a high speed connection you can see it can take a while. The main thing is try different things. Some use different ports and you may just find a port they aren't blocking. For some reason I think I remember Limewire working better but Kazaa will be slow.

Ick...and I was hoping that it would be quicker than my parents' so-so wireless speed. Oh well.

Any word on Bittorrent speeds?

I have avoided those because of viruses and spyware but I think their speeds are alright. Not sure though so bump for more.
