Filed FAFSA/FA late, do I just need to pay out of pocket?

This will be my first year attending college. I graduated in 2014 and due to severe depression didn’t accept any college acceptances and gave up. Started feeling better around June and applied to a local community college but since it was so late I filed my fafsa past the deadline. I know it’s too late to receive any help for this fall semester and I will need to pay out of pocket but my question was: Will fafsa ever help me replenish the money I’m spending on my own? The reason I ask is because my sister paid out of pocket for a couple of years in cc and then when she applied for fafsa, they gave her the money she would had spent on her classes in the years prior. Her situation was a bit different since she didn’t apply out of fear for legal reasons but I’m a bit clueless as to how college works in general, so I was wondering if I just need to pick up extra jobs to pay and just deal with my mistake or if I will receive help later on when I renew my fafsa. Thank you.

The 2015-2106 FAFSA can be filed until the end of the 2015-2016 school year in June 2016.

You should get your $5500 Direct Loan. In addition, if you are entitled to any portion of the Pell Grant, you will get that too. You will get on,y half each semester.

How much does your CC cost?

I’m starting school THIS fall, my registration date is on the 15th. I’m not worried for next year but I wanted to start as soon as possible since I’ve already missed a year. I don’t mind paying out of pocket for this semester but I just didn’t know if the ship for help right now had sailed. And I’m not entirely sure yet, I haven’t chosen all my classes

You are misreading the FAFSA instructions and the response from thumper. You have until June 2016 to file for the 2015-16 school year. If it doesn’t get processed in time, they will refund you the fall amount if you’d paid it. You can also ask the FA office to defer your payment until the loan comes in.

Your school may have had a priority deadline, and may use that deadline for extra funds like SEOG, work study, school grants, and sometimes the state grants also had a deadline, so you may be out of luck for those. However, you’ll get the Stafford loan and any Pell money for THIS school year.

What’s your FAFSA EFC?

Also keep in mind that some community colleges do not participate in the federal loan program. Check your school
