My daughter has no taxable income. I've read online that it is advisable for students to file a tax return even if there is zero income because it will provide proof if needed for the FAFSA.

No, she does not need to file a tax return if she’s not legally required to do so and it will not affect her FAFSA filing or processing. Not having any taxable income doesn’t necessarily mean she isn’t required to file though, so make sure to check the irs.gov site to make sure that she’s under the required filing limits. If her FAFSA is selected for verification, she would just submit any W-2’s/1099’s, etc. that she did receive even if she wasn’t required to file.

My son had no income during his senior year of high school or before. He had no w-2 forms or 1099 forms and NO income. He therefore had no reason to file income taxes…no income! On the FAFSA he just indicated that he would not be filing (which is a choice). It was not an issue. He was selected for verification (every year) and he had nothing to send, so he sent nothing…again…no issue.
