Filipino = URM?

Does being Filipino count as a URM? I know it's Asian, but most Asians at UPenn are Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Indian, right? So could being Filipino work to my advantage? I'm also part Spanish.

Filipinos are not URM’s.

But would you still be put at a disadvantage for it?

Disadvantage relative to whom? Relative to URM’s, yes. Relative to Whites, negligibly so.

but would my part-Spanish ethnicity more than atone for it, or possibly put me at a slight advantage?

If you indicate yourself as being of Hispanic ethnicity on the Common Application, you may receive a boost via Affirmative Action. However, some schools don’t consider those of Spanish heritage to be URM’s; I’m not sure about UPenn specifically.

Do you have an idea which schools do?

No, I don’t. I doubt that schools advertise this. But you may receive more assistance on the Hispanic subforum; entomom is usually quite helpful.

Part spanish is part-White. I remember reading at the common app that Spanish people, as in people from Spain Are not considered Hispanic.

I’m Filipino too. :slight_smile: generally Filipino is not Considered URM. Probably a URA haha so maybe It’s an advantage within that Asian category.

The Common Application does not say this.

Whoops haha…I checked my common app (for the first time in forever) :slight_smile: disregard what I just said.
