I am full filipino and was curious as to whether or not being filipino benefits in college admissions in schools of high academic rigor such as the ivys and top UC schools ie UCB, UCLA. In addition, does being a first generation college student increase one’s chances of getting into the previously mentioned universities? Thanks!
Filipino ≠ URM, sorry. First Gen may play a factor when you’re being evaluated-- to what degree is unknown. Good luck
First generation can help. UCs do not consider underrepresented minority (URM) as a factor. Majority of colleges including ivies do, but Filipino is not considered a URM, which includes Hispanic Americans, African Americans, native Americans (American Indian, native Hawaiin, and native Alaskan). Some include Pacific Islanders in the URM category but that classification does not include the Philipines. Which are included in the Asian classification.
You might have a slight edge over East Asians and Indians because they are so overrepresented, but definitely not to Blacks/Hispanics/Whites.
Unfortunately, no joy on getting classified as a URM.
Mabuhay!
