Filling in the EC section

My son will be applying next year but I figured I would look over the Common App to see its layout. Everything appears straightforward except for the EC page.

The EC activities section looks oriented to activities one does on a regular bases and are conventional e.g. sports played each year or clubs attended each year. What about when your ECs don't fall so nicely into hours/week and weeks/yr.

My son snowboards from Dec-March every year varying hours a week. He long boards when the streets finally clear of snow and rain spring to fall varying hours a week. So how does one list this or any other activities that is variable ie he rock climbs (is a certified belayer), built and rides a special geared bike. He does not participate in group sport activities.

In his spare time he likes to do photo or video then work with photoshop and light room to manipulate images or work in the wood shop building things.

He has done community service with 3 different organizations so far, different amounts of hours. Do you just lump it all as a community services section?

He wil likely be in the National honor society (they do community service too so a 4th group to add to #3). Is being asked to be in the National Honor society an honor or EC?

Thanks ;)

I can’t really give any advice on 1 or 2.

Keep those separate. Put them down separately each with the times that he worked for that organization.

National Honor Society would be more of a EC than something to put in the honor category since it is typically a club. Save the honor section for any awards or recognitions received.

Thanks for your input. What i am getting from other threads is that you kind of have a choice.

Either try to make your ECs fit in to some category that you can write in a slot and describe or create a separate resume type sheet outlining your ECs in a similar fashion.
