filling out fafsa without being a permanent resident of a state

So, im a new green card holder and am looking to apply for colleges. I was filling out the FAFSA, on the very first page i had to fill out which state i am a permanent resident of and for how long. Since i just move to the US and the requirement for a permanent resident of my State is 1 year, how do i fill the fafsa? do i leave it blank or do i put in the date i got my green card?

@happymomof1 Any advice?

How did you get a green card so quickly?

i got it through my parents, with a family visa.

Put the date you got your green card. That is the date you became a permanent resident. One thing you need to know…if you have been a resident of a state for less than a year, it is possible that you won’t be entitled to instate tuition.

How long have you actually LIVED in this state?

i arrived in january. so it will be 1 year by the time i reach college, however the proof of documents wont be 1 year, as i started paying rent only from march, and dont have taxes. this all seems complicated -.-

That one year requirement is probably for purposes of getting instate tuition. It doesn’t have anything to do with determining what your state of legal residence is. You can live in a state for one day and be a legal resident of that state. What matters is where you presently are and what your intentions are.

It sounds as if you are very much a legal resident of the state where you are currently living. Whether or not you qualify for instate tuition, that’s a different matter.

Are you a dependent of your parents? Which state are they residents of?

Questions you don’t have to answer: FAFSA

^I think that question on the FAFSA might pertain to state aid

thanks everyone! that clears things up a lot.

Did you arrive here at the same time as your parents? Did all of you get your green cards at the same time? Are you young enough to still be a dependent for your parents on FAFSA?

If you are dependent for your FAFSA and if your parents were here as legal residents before you were, then your date and state of residency will be whenever they moved to their state of residence.
