I'm wondering how you're supposed to identify yourself in regards to race/ethnicity on college apps... I know that in apps, the general questions are "are you hispanic/latino?" and then "pick a race (black, white, asian, native american, etc.)". How exactly do you choose a race when you're hispanic or latino? I mean I don't even know what percentage "white/black/native" I am as literally everyone of hispanic descent is a huge mix of all three. I generally identify myself as "latino" so I've never really thought about the black/white/etc. Unless you're from Spain, less than 1% of Caribbean and South Americans are purely white.

That’s definitely not true for South Americans. Argentina and Uruguay both have large populations of whites who are only white.

That might be right for Argentina and Uruguay but it’s definitely not true for the rest of South America:

Paraguay: Mestizo, 74.5%
Peru: 45% Amerindian, 37% Mestizo
Ecuador: 65% Mestizo, 25% Amerindian
Venezuela: 60% Mestizo
Colombia: 58% Mestizo
Bolivia: 85% non-white

etc. It’s more true for the Caribbean countries, but even in South America there is a much higher percentage of mixed ethnic peoples.

All you can really do is think about the options and pick the one you identify most with or feel best describes you. For you, the second question won’t matter much, as they’ll get what they want to know from the hispanic/latino question.

This question has been asked on the Hispanic Students subforum. It is difficult for students with a background with a large mestizo population, so you just have to answer with your best knowledge of your family background or skip the race part completely as it is optional.

Pick black if you can. Or native american. Those will help your admission chances most.
