My daughter is in the process of filling out her application. We need advice from someone who knows..she is from Texas and is not Top 10 but in the top 15-18%...We know that her chances are slim but are trying to maximize them by picking a less competitive major. She really wants to major in jouranlism and her hook is Editor in Chief of the yearbook. Should she put Education or Social Work first and Journalism second or leave journalism off and just put Education and then Social work as her choices for majors? Don't want to make it obvious that she is trying to "back door" in...advice??

It’s not the major that matters, it’s the “school/college” that matters. I am not familiar with where Journalism falls, but the School of Liberal Arts is one of the easiest to get into still, although I think Education is too.

But something like McCombs School of Business or Engineering would be the hardest.

It is my understanding that it is easier to get into education than liberal arts. I honestly don’t know about social work.

Apparently Social Work and Education and among the easier college’s to get in to…We attended Longhorn Saturday and they did say that it is quite common to do internal transfers once you are admitted…Just don’t want them to see the 3 years of yearbook and the Editor in Chief and then wonder why she isn’t interterested in majoring in Journalism. We are thinking Education first choice and Journalism second choice so maybe they will think she wants to teach journalism…lol

Why not swap them? You’ll get into your choice major if it works, and if not they will consider you for your second major/school. I know of a friend who had something first (can’t remember what) and didn’t get it, but got into the Geosciences as his second choice. So, they do look at it. He wasn’t top 10% I don’t think.

Journalism is in the College of Communication. I know that there was a seminar at orientation about how to transfer into the Comm school, so I would say it’s at least semi-difficult to get into, but I can’t be 100% sure.

put social works first and education as second, that will maximize your chances. you can transfer into journalism your second year.

Journalism is in Communications. It is competitive to get into, but not like business or engineering.

A daughter of a friend of mine applied to communications (for fall 2009) and got in, she was top 20% with good test scores, ec’s and essays, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that your daughter could get in her first choice.

Good luck!

Thanks for your input…it is really a roll of the dice at this point, as there seemed to be no rhyme or reason this year as to who was admitted (not in top 10%).

One more thing… we have been told that College of Communications is pretty competitive since the radio/tv/film department is so strong…

If she has really high test scores she could get into communications.

I got into architecture and I was in the top 14% or something. I can’t even remember.

If you’re coming from a competitive, strong public school, and you are inside top 20% applying for social work/education, it’s almost an automatic in.

Great News! She is coming from a competitive HS and her test score are above average so we will keep our fingers crossed and hopefully she can flash the hook-em sign with her dad…LOL
