Is this major a wannabe "film" major. I'm asking because I think the description of the major sounds amazing on the website, but it also seems like it's for those who might have not gotten into UCLA film, USC Film etc, yet wanted to be in so cal.

Just asking because the major could go either way for me, and I would prefer the opposite of a "film" major, as much as I would appreaciate the major if it were analytical/critique major like Art History, or Philosophy except with media and film of course.

It actually used to be called Film Studies... they renamed it a few years ago.

It's one of the larger majors in the School of Humanities (~300 declared majors). But the emphasis is more on film/media analysis and criticism than on production. While there are 3-course sequences on both screenwriting and production at UCI, folks who want to do film production more likely attend UCLA, USC, Chapman, CSULB, etc.

If you check out the course offerings and requirements for the major, you get a good gist of UCI's emphasis: 2008-09 UCI Catalogue: Humanities
