Film major

If i want to major in film potentially at chapman or texas - should i not list this in application so easier to get in?

Your application will ask what major you’re applying for. If you apply to film, you have to submit a portfolio. Keep in mind that film major acceptance rates are notoriously low, as in 10% or below low, even at schools with 50% acceptance rates.

If you apply to a different major just because it’s easier to get into, you will not be able to just switch your major once you get in. You’ll still have to apply to the film program with a portfolio. There is no way around this.

can u get accepted to school and not major?

You can get accepted to a school with an undecided major, but you will probably not be able to major in film if you do so.

why is that?

Not sure about Texas, but Chapman makes it almost impossible to switch your major to Film production once you are there. Texas is difficult to get into unless you are in state. Chapman and Texas are both excellent schools, however there are a lot of other great film programs out there as well. Have you looked into other film programs?

I am looking into Emerson, LMU, and Ithaca. I’m also interested in english creative writing, so looking for schools with good both.

Those are good as well @JulienEd. Check out UNCSA, DePaul and Columbia College Chicago if you are looking to add anymore to your list.

It’s nearly impossible to apply to a school as an undecided or non-arts major and then switch to an arts major (dance, film, tv, visual, theatre, etc).

This is because BFA programs are often very intense and focused curriculum-wise and schools only accept a small number of students each year into these majors so that these students can get the attention they need. At a lot of schools, art majors rarely have time to double major in non-art subjects for this reason; they simply don’t have time.

Also, to be a film major, you need to submit a portfolio. This applies to both high school seniors applying for the first time and college students trying to change majors. You can’t just switch your major; you have to reapply as an internal transfer and submit a portfolio. (switching majors is also considered a transfer in these cases because they are majors within different schools of the college; for example, a biology major is usually in a university’s College of Arts and Science, while a dance major is within the College of Visual and Performing Arts. Undeclared majors are almost always admitted to a school’s College of Arts and Science and they have to choose a major from that school or transfer to a different major.) Film major acceptance rates are already very low, as I have said in my previous post. Transfer acceptance rates are even lower. If you weren’t admitted as a freshman, you will probably not be admitted as a transfer.

So if you’re admitted as an undeclared major, you probably won’t be able to major in film.
