I was wondering what were some schools i could apply to to major in film. At the moment i want to be either a Driector or screenwriter.

So if i decide that i no longer want to be a director and just a screenwriter should i then just major in Creative Writing or something of that nature.

And keep in mind i live in GA so if you could name some in the south i's appreciate it. But im not above moving.

In Georgia, look at Emory College in Emory University. There are majors in Film Studies, Creative Writing and Theater. You could take some from each in your first two years and see if you want to be a major by junior year, or do something different or related.
The Film Studies course catalogue showed some classes in Scriptwriting, as well as internship arrangements for making films. The department has 4 faculty.
It might not have as many courses to choose from, but might give you the chance to find out if it's for you or not. Meanwhile, you're at a great university in an amazing city, Atlanta. If you're not absolutely sure you want to work in film, perhaps this is a good solution since you know you'll get a fine education no matter what you study at Emory.

Northwestern has an awesome Creative Writing for the Media certificate program, you apply for it at the end of your sophomore year, in the Radio/Television/Film program. Overall, a fairly strong and balanced program, though I guess I'm kind of biased since I'm in it.

if you want to be an "auteur" then Tisch at NYU, though I have my own qualms about that program. USC is the other biggie. Some Ivy's and LACs have film studies programs, though rarely those are involved in production, so be sure to research the program before applying. UCSB is pretty much strictly film theory. I think Ohio University has a fairly decent program. Then there are the more artsy schools--Emerson in Boston, Columbia College in Chicago, those are just a couple I can recall right now. I'm a midwest girl, so I don't know too much about the south, but I also echo Emory--don't know anything about the program but it's a good school. Also, SCAD I'm sure has a film program, but that's only if you want to go to art school route.

My piece of advice: look for a balanced program. Generally, it will either learn towards theory (so like film studies) or be solely production (like Tisch). Personally, you need a solid background in film history and theory, as well as experience in production, to fully understand film. If you have any hops of working with 16mm, good luck, as most programs are now video/digital based. There also seems to be a growing trend in academia towards theory being more important production. For example, the MFA program in film at NU was just recently suspended, for reasons they never explained. It was a top program, but now I guess they want to focus more on the writing/theory aspects.

My Tisch kids actually studied/are studying quite a bit of film theory and not just production along with their academics. My current student is majoring in Cinema Studies along with French and Dramatic Literature as either another major(s) or minor(s). My graduate minored in Philosophy along with taking the Film & TV major. Just remember - it's what each individual student brings to the program - it's a collaborative effort working with other students and their professors. Since my kids are very proactive, they were able to take advantage of all that Tisch and NYU offers in terms of their amazing study abroad programs, fantastic internships working with Academy Award nominated/winning directors, writers, producers, production designers, etc., plus the professors who are absolutely wonderful and are professionals in their individual fields of interest. They have been tremendous mentors.
