I'm a recent graduate in film and philosophy and I am considering to apply for an MFA in film directing at Columbia. I've considered to apply because of its strong narrative focus and the prestige of the Columbia brand. I've read that it is a great program, but... it is incredibly expensive. Not only the tuition, but living in NYC as well.

My question is: is it really worth the price?

Although I received a BA in film I am not sure of my skills and knowledge in the field to jump into the film industry right away. I know that an MFA is not necessary for getting into the business (it is not even necessary to have gone to college to tell the truth), but I feel that the education I could receive with a master's degree may give me the opportunity to become a better artist.

Any thoughts?

Certainly an MFA will help you to be a better artist. What is your ultimate goal? Indie films, to work in the industry? Documentary focused? What is your dream? If you can get a handle on your goals, you will know where to go. There are several excellent graduate programs, and each has a focus. One of the best things about an MFA is the connections. Be sure you go to a place that will give you access to the people in the focus you want to pursue. I know more about undergrad schools, but my understanding is that Columbia is known a strong place for INDIE films.

I would apply to several graduate schools, see which ones you get into, and then make a decision based on cost. Columbia is the most expensive film program. They don’t give very good aid, and they don’t give very many fellowships. However there are many quality programs out there to consider. Just give it a try.
