Film program at Columbia?

I'm a recent graduate in film and philosophy and I am considering to apply for an MFA in film directing at Columbia. I've considered to apply because of its strong narrative focus and the prestige of the Columbia brand. I've read that it is a great program, but... it is incredibly expensive. Not only the tuition, but living in NYC as well.

My question is: is it really worth the price?

Although I received a BA in film I am not sure of my skills and knowledge in the field to jump into the film industry right away. I know that an MFA is not necessary for getting into the business (it is not even necessary to have gone to college to tell the truth), but I feel that the education I could receive with a master's degree may give me the opportunity to become a better artist.

Any thoughts?

That’s a very good question. The film industry is a business, and it’s pyramid shaped in that there are more opportunities at the bottom and few at the top. It’s also all about networking and being able to find your niche in the field. If you are considering teaching at the college level, then an MFA could be useful. The majority of film grads who I know are not taking Master’s degrees in film - they are out there working in various capacities. Some have chosen completely different career paths - law, etc.
