Film Programs in the SUNY system or Alternatives

Hey,

I'm going to be a senior this upcoming year in High School. I want to major in filmmaking, but unfortunately from what I've read many SUNY schools don't have known "film" programs. Instead, they have Mass Communication programs, which lean toward radio and television or broadcast journalism. It's not that I have a problem with going into that instead, but I see a lot of these colleges have video production under mass communication and it makes me wonder if that's similar enough to most film programs. I know Oneonta and Fredonia have programs which incorporate film into their mass communication programs, but schools like New Paltz, Oswego, Plattsburgh, Cortland and others seem to ofter strictly video/tv/radio programs. I've also seen interdisiplinary "film study" programs at some of these schools, but I don't know how much they focus on filmmaking. I also know Purchase has a film program, but my counselor advised against it because it is conservatory and very few kids get into it.

So, can anyone give me an idea of how these mass communication programs are, and what would be a good one for an aspiring filmmaker/director, and how are those interdisiplinary "film study" programs?

Thanks in advance!

You're in luck. The link above will give you a start. Check out Fredonia, Buffalo, and Purchase.

Do your homework/research and don't discount a school just because "my counselor advised against it because it is conservatory and very few kids get into it". If you have the background and portfolio (if one is needed), go for it! Also, recognize that many h.s. guidance counselors know very little about conservatory programs- be they for music, film, art, dance or theater. These can be VERY different applications/processes than they usually deal with.
