Film school class of 2022 decisions

Hey guys! For everyone who applied to film schools this year, where did you guys get into and where did you apply?

For me:
Accepted at LMU, NYU, and Northwestern, rejected to USC and UCLA

I got into UNCSA, Emerson, Ithaca, Syracuse, FSU (still waiting for final film school decision), Westminster (London), and Columbia College Chicago. I got rejected from USC.

478 and awkward

My son is aiming for film school at NYU or USC. Would you mind sharing your grades, test scores, and activities so I can share with him what you have done?

Thanks!

Hi!

I’m in the IB program, currently in final exams. I took Bio HL, English Language and Literature HL, History HL, Art SL, German SL, and Math SL. My transcripts that I sent to the universities had about a 31 overall (out of 45). I’ll be going to UNCSA for Screenwriting this fall.

I live in Germany, used to live in Memphis, Tennessee and was born in Japan, so not really “from” anywhere. XD

I was in my school’s ambassador program, prom committee, gave a TedX speech and helped organize two TedX events in high school, played volleyball, cello, double bass, was in dance club, and I made three films for my school (one a German rap video, one a trailer for Prom Committee, one as a short film for GSA about a vampire integrating into an all-human school). That last film was part of my film portfolio for university.

In my essays for film school I talked about discovering I was the only black girl in my kindergarten class when I realised I was the only one who needed the brown crayon to draw myself. I talked about how as a five year-old, the brown crayon was an awkward acknowledgement of what made me different. But as a teen I now realise the brown crayon, my personal experience, is a new perspective- MY perspective- that can redefine the ways people of colour are portrayed in film.

So my recommendation for your son’s essays are to take some time to reflect on exactly why he wants to make films- and not to say anything too basic, like just saying “he loves film”. What exactly does he love about it? Who are his biggest inspirations? What was the moment he decided “this is what I want to do?” As long as he follows those guidelines, I think he’ll be sure to impress.

I hope that helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Very helpful and great advice for my rising Sr. He too will be applying to UNCSA for film /editing . We need all the advice he can find
