Film School Results

Letters are out everyone. Sadly, I'm not in. However, I did get a likely letter at NYU so I am not that sad. I want to be a director, so its a better fit then USC anyway.

I wish everyone else goodluck.

How do you know letters are out? Where do you live?

Ummm...I know they're out because I got one. Midwest.

Hmm, when you say you didn't get it, do you mean in the school, film school, or both?

BTW, congrats about NYU.

I got into USC with a scholarship, but not into the film major. It's their fault for not wanting to watch my movies...haha

Thanks, NYU is really better suited for me, but I still would have liked to get in...

Safia -

I wonder what they were looking for. I always read your informative posts because my son applied to both schools too. Best of Luck at NYU.

Thanks so much-

My prof, here at u of m, got her ph.d. at usc and she knows the dean of cinema school personally, so she's calling today...so I'll find out...

Please post the info when you find out.

Last Spring we went on the tour and we were very impressed by the cinema school. They say they choose by talent, but since so many talented kids apply, I am curious to know what criteria they use to pick one over another.

My teacher spoke with him. He said the committee was very impressed by my application, and this year was very competitve (blah, blah, blah) Some one earlier on these boards said that USC wants to shape kids and perfers less experience. This is not true at all. This was the portion of my app he was most impressed with.

Mostly he hinted that I had a major disadvantage: white male. This makes me more proud of USC, as I'm a big believer in Affirmative Action. He also spoke about coming from the midwest, without family connections in the industry, as a hard comparison between a lot of applicants coming from l.a. with working mothers/fathers in the industry.

The film-production major actually refered my application to the screenwriting and cinema studies programs even though I didn't apply. So, I was really suprised to get an two acceptance packet yesterday, both from USC.

Its a hard choice because USC gave me a half-merit scholarship, but I am pretty sure NYU is a better fit. Especially location. All the filmmakers I know have told me to keep away from L.A. for as long as possible (something about it sucking the soul out...haha really dramatic). Let me know what ends up happening with your son.

Good luck.

I just got my acceptance letter and it's very interesting.

I got into USC and the Cinema School, but not into NYU's film school (but into the regular school). I am going to go to USC..but good luck in NYC, Safiamilke: hopefully this is just what you're looking for!

Safia:

Congrats on the USC acceptances. Screenwriting is especially hard to get into. As I had said elsewhere, my son is very happy in the Critical Studies major.

As an aside, his told me that his only friends in film school are in the screenwriting program. He is, however, looking forward to his major production course next semester.

Why don't you look at the the course requirements for the various majors on the USC website?

BTW, he doesn't find USC too Hollywood, big studio, oriented. He's not so sure though about some of his classmates.

Gisellechx,

I am confused by your post. NYU does not defer people who are not accepted into the film school. If you are not accepted into Tisch, you cannot go to NYU. Also, NYU has not sent out decisions. The only reason I know, is because I recieved a likely letter that is only sent out to 5% of the applicants. I just want to make sure, you might still have a chance!

As for NYU vs. USC. I've spoken with my professor here (who got her Ph.D in critical studies at USC) and I've ruled out critical studies over screenwriting. I looked at the requirements, and basically I would have little choice in classes, as their are so many you are forced to take. Screenwriting is the same. I'm going to visit, and I'll try and keep an open mind, but I'm leaning towards the more open NYU.

Oh, and another problem has entered the equation. I just got into Northwestern and Wesleyan. I'm still waiting on two more, but I really hope I don't get in. I can't handle all these choices.

Has anyone heard from the USC production program? It's getting down to the final days...ahhhh.
