I’m planning on applying to the following schools for their grad film programs…
USC
UCLA
NYU
Columbia
Northwestern
I’ve heard many cons about Columbia such as ridiculous tuition and it taking up to 5 years to complete the grad program. USC, NYU, and Northwestern are also ridiculously expensive. A con for Northwestern is that Zach Braff went there. Ideally I’d love to go to UCLA. Can anyone give me some input on all this?

That's a plus, unless you hated "Sideways" or "About Schmidt."

I believe it's generally considered that USC has the best film school in the nation (some claim the entire freaking world, but then again, how many film schools are there in the world in general?). USC really is a great cinema school, though.

NYU is amazing, too.

If you're in CA, definitely go for UCLA film school, because of the low tuition. But tops might really be USC/NYU. USC has great financial aid, by the way. The tuition might seem ridiculously expensive, but actually, they are extremely good about fufilling need-based aid, and often give pretty darn good scholarships. When you have an endowment nearing 3 billion, which Southern Cal. does, they can help out their most promising or needing students.

Just apply to USC/NYU/Northwestern/etc and see what happens. You might get accepted, you might also get a great scholarship.

I'm sure there are very good film programs at other state schools besides UCLA, but I don't know enough about cinema programs to say.

There's a superb book out there with a wealth of information on each of the individual schools you mentioned, entitled "Film School Confidential: The Insider's Guide to Film Schools." Here's the amazon link - I strongly suggest taking a look at it.
