So I’m looking to study film in college. I’m interested in production (not screenwriting, theory, etc), and I’m looking for a school that focuses more on the artistic side of filmmaking rather than big-budget Hollywood type-stuff. From what I understand NYU has a reputation of being a school that fits that description, as opposed to a school like USC. However, since I live in north New Jersey and really close to NYC, I would rather go somewhere further away from home. I’d also rather go to a college that’s more of a “university” with an actual campus (another reason why I wouldn’t want to go to NYU) and a wider range of things to study rather than an art-specifc college . So, what other schools fit this description? Any help is appreciated.
Chapman University, perhaps?
BU
Syracuse offers some programs in Europe, which may indicate something about the styles of film their students find interesting.
I’m not sure that’s a distinction worth making – big budget vs. small artsy. Most big budget directors/writers/producers started out working on small, independent films. Apply to the top programs, all of them. They’re tough to get into because they’re selective - and effective in giving grads those all-important business connections. That’s what you should be focusing on: where will I a good education, hands-on experience, internships AND get to know influential people.
Chapman and LMU.
@katliamom is correct.
