What are some of the best film schools in or around NY?

I am in downstate New York around Rockland which is kind of between the city and New Jersey so both areas are possibilities to travel to.

So far in researching I have seen New York Film Aademy which some people seem to like butma lot of reviews also advise to stay away from there. There is NYU which looks to be a top program but besides for whether I could get in or not, it looks like they are pretty expensive so it may not be an option for me now regardless. Tisch also looks to have a good reputation but it looks like it may be more for theatre than directing films.

I'm interested to learn about filming and to works skills that would be able to be applied on work like movies and tv and I'm open to do a program that runs anywhere from a few weeks to one to two years. Also outside of film I think I have the knowledge on making a business after working with my cousins company for a while, I want to try to push my self and do something that really interests me such as working in film. I'm not a 'write' but I think I have the feel to work on visual and audio aspects relating to film and am interested to learn about how to do it.

Tisch is definitely tops. There is definitely a strong program in film, alongside theater, as the film-related alumni list from there is prestigious and endless.

You’re right, Tisch is very pricey, but hey, why not apply anyway? Put together that portfolio, get spectacular grades+test scores, and see what happens. I think NYU has been a little more generous with the merit scholarships these days, so you never know.

I believe Columbia might also have a strong film program as well. Their graduate film school at least, is pretty prestigious.

UCLA and USC are also places you really should consider, even though they’re really far from you.

Thanks. I think I may lack qualifications for some of those schools cause it is a new venture for me but one I’m interested in and feel motivated about. I’m considering an 8 week program at New York Film Academy or something similar as a possibility to get some basics down and work from there. It seems like they could also provide an oppurtunity to work make short a few short films which may help with experience and a portfolio.

My son is a professional actor and worked on a movie in NY state this summer. I was interested in where the crew went to school. SVA, Hofstra and Brookyln College had students in film programs. Here is links two two of the schools.
