Film studies

I'm interested in applying to Columbia because of its film department. I'm really interested in film as a major. However, I have to say that I really haven't done anything that I could put on my resume to show that I have an interest in this major. I didn't even know that "Film Studies" was a college major until about a year ago, and I did not become really interested in film until the end of sophomore year. I have always loved great classic movies, and this year I am taking a film class (the only one my school offers) about History Through Film. In my application response about books I have read in the past year, I could write down several books I have read about film (I am obsessed with it and read about it all the time). I could also show my passion for it in the response about recent films I have watched. If I can write about my future career plans, I was thinking I would say that film is perfect for me because it combines everything I love - writing (English is my favorite class besides the Film class I'm currently taking) and all the arts (music, acting, visual art, etc. - I've been very involved in the arts throughout high school). I think I could manage to sound very passionate about Film despite not having a lot of film stuff on my resume.

Still, I have never submitted a film to any student festivals or anything like that and my school does not have any film clubs, so the only concrete thing in my application would be the Film class I am currently taking.

My question is, for all you students at Columbia who applied as film majors, was your situation at all similar to mine? Or are most admitted film majors people who have already made their own films, founded a film society, etc? Am I at all competitive against other people who are applying to major in film? (also, if you know anyone who is majoring in film, you can post on here as well :)

Thanks!
