Fin Aid questions

How does Fin Aid work once you get it from direct deposit? Is it like a credit card that can be used anywhere? (e.g. Walmart, Amazon etc.) Can you use it with online stores?

I ask since I need to buy (with Financial Aid money) a laptop as soon as possible since I won't have one and the UF Bookstore doesn't have that great of a selection so I will probably order it online or go to a store.

Also how long does it take for Financial Aid to come in for Fall? Is it usually after the first week?

i’m pretty sure financial aid is released after drop-add.

also, direct deposit means its directly deposited into your bank account. its cash, essentially.

As aforautumn said, the leftover money goes straight into your bank account; that will happen within 2-3 weeks into the semester. If you have loans, they will be ready for disbursement on the 18th -at least mine will be, I checked the fafsa website and it said it was scheduled for disbursement on Aug 18th, I’m assuming UF will pay itself first before depositing it into my bank account though.

You should be able to survive without a laptop for the first 2-3 weeks of class, unlike summer classes you’re not really going to be doing much the first week of class. It might be a little bit of a pain, but there are plenty of computer labs around campus where you can do your homework and such, while waiting for the money to be in your bank -anytime after Aug. 29th.

If I open up direct deposit and my card is a Visa, will I not be able to pay? Since they don’t accept Visa online.

Fin Aid only gets disbursed by direct deposit straight into your bank account. What exactly do you mean with “will I not be able to pay? Since they don’t accept Visa online” Pay who? UF? If that is the case, you don’t need to pay them. Once the money gets disbursed it goes from the government to UF, while in UF’s hands they will pay themselves first (tuition, housing, fees, etc…) if there’s anything left over, then it will go from UF to your bank account, you don’t pay the school, the school paid itself already by the time it makes to your account.

Oh I thought you have to give them permission to do that and if you don’t then they will deposit the money and you pay them on your own. So what do they pay themselves? Housing and Tuition only? I don’t want them paying for crap I don’t want or need to pay for, haha. I was only planning to pay those two things, while books and monthly groceries I will pay on my own (no meal plan.)

By bank account, do you mean my Well Fargo bank account (provided that I have one)?

You have to give them permission for additional charges, (meal plan, books, etc…) the tuition and housing are automatically taken out, that’s why it’s being deferred, and that’s the why fin aid being disbursed through the school, otherwise they will deposit it straight into your account.

@UF2015 it will be deposited into the account that you give them it does not have to be Hells Fargo, stay away from them if you can… For this, log into your ISIS and on the left under Financial Services click on Direct Deposit and follow the instructions to set up your bank account (you will need the bank routing number and your account number)

Thanks so much, I just added it for Direct Deposit.

you’re welcome! :)

kttn2103 - where on the FAFSA website did you find the disbursement date?

Well, I got an email saying that a disbursement statement was available (or something like that) and it said to log in with my id and pin blah blah blah, and when I first logged in, to the right there was this thing that said that my statement (again, not sure if that was the exact word they used) was available and to download and save it or print it. So I opened the pdf and it talked about the sub and the un sub loan, the amounts I will be receiving this fall, it shows how much is being deducted as origination fee, the interest rebate, and that the disbursal date to UF was 8-18-11, it also said that if you have any questions about when exactly it will be paid out to me that I had to call the school directly, because fafsa only hands the money over to the school, then it’s up to the school to pass it on to us; so that’s why I think they’re going to pay themselves before giving me the loan money along with the grant. BTW this was only about the loans that I got, it doesn’t mention the pell grant

One more question. I set up the direct deposit on Isis for my son. When I go back to view it, it says “inactive” and I don’t know why or how to make it active. Anyone else see “inactive” on their direct deposit?

**edit - nevermind - I got it. It now says active
