ok, i'm speaking for my good friend. He got into Stanford last week, but he only got around $5000 financial aid money and he told me he probably won't be able to afford Stanford. His parents probably fall in the "no man's land" income bracket, and his sister goes to a catholic school (tuition several thousand). Also his dad's very sick. If he doesn't end up there, he'll probably go to lesser school with merit scholarship. But heck, I feel soo bad that he got into Stanford yet can't go because of financial reasons!!! It's need-blind, but I know that many people who aren't either very wealthy or quite poor can't afford to pay $40,000.
Is there any way he can up the financial aid to around $20,000?
It sounds kind of unrealistic that they'd up the aid that much since there's a formula, but could a letter pleading (?) for more money work? maybe?

I think a letter's a good idea. Perhaps calling and talking to them on the phone would work too. It'd be easier to explain, IMO, on the phone. But maybe wait until later... when they're not so busy (and irritable). Telling them about his circumstances should help, since it's not taken into account yet, but I doubt it will be raised that much.

really? strange...

I know someone who goes there right now who has received full scholarship. Her father is a pastor, so her family can't afford much. She doesn't have to pay a dime.

Your friend should contact Stanford on this matter.

well pastor's son/daughter would get almost full financial aid.
I don't know my friend's income range, but i'm guessing it'd be around 80K to 120K (who knows i'm just guessing), where it's hard to give him so much money but at the same time, it's hard for him to pay $40K.

oh, that's probably the reason. The girl I know has a yearly income of around 30K
