Just a word of caution to all those that are getting Financial Aid awards that might have chosen a double room as your first choice but received a single.

I just received an email from FinAid to clarify things.

They are now saying they will only pay the difference if a "single" was not chosen as any choice on the application.

So what does that mean. It means if you ranked your choice as double, triple, quad, single in that order, than they "will not" pay the difference because you put single as an option, even though it was the very last option.

I can't even remember what I put on the application and now because it is closed, I cannot see it. But it seems to me we had to rank them in the order of preference but I really don't remember.

what?!?! I talked to a lady 2 days ago when i received a single and she said that they will cover it if a single wasn’t your first choice. Crap, i think i put a single as my second choice just because i was naive in thinking i would get a double. Where is this email?

***!? it seems that sometimes the finaid office can provide conflicting answers to our questions. i called today to verify they would adjust my aid since double was my first choice but i received a single and she said yes, they would verify this with the housing office. i reeally just want to be in a double :/

This is the exact text of the email the sent me today.

Good afternoon Ms. *********,

We apologize for the additional email, but we wanted to let you know that the official stance is that as long as you did not request at all to have a single room, then the difference would be adjusted in grant aid. If you selected in any of your choices for a single room, then the only option would be for you to request a loan for that additional expense.

Thank you

This is the exact text of the email I received just yesterday. Of course, as soon as I received it I went online and signed my housing contract. Only to get the email above today.

Good morning Ms. *********,

If you requested a double, but were assigned a single, we will adjust your aid accordingly to account for the higher expense. We will verify with housing as to what you requested/were assigned, and anticipate that this should be taken care of by October - at the latest.

Thank you

I have since received an email from someone in housing that says that FinAid is misunderstanding the policy and giving out the wrong information.

Seems like a case of he said/she said and that in all likelihood we won’t really know until we get the funds from FinAid.

Notice in the email they say it could be as late as October before the fund the extra amount. When I asked about that, they did say I could possibly have to pay the difference when it was due and then get reimbursed from FinAid later.

I haven’t found the FinAid office to be rude at all. In fact, they have tried to be quite helpful all the time. I think they are just confused about the policy and are just telling people whatever they are being told.

I just am feeling now like I won’t really know for sure until I actually get (or don’t get) the money put into my account.

If you put single as your first choice you definately will not get finaid money to cover the difference. If that is a big issue, you might want to call housing and see if there is any chance to get put in a double while they are still moving people around.

same as above ^, and i only signed the housing contract because the finaid woman told me they would make up the difference-- i should’ve recorded the conversation and got her name.

I was annoyed. Got the “if it was a choice at all we can’t help you” email. The funny thing is that if you had put townhouse as one of your choices, I bet you’d have gotten it which is just as much as a single. So it’s kind of a catch 22, it’s almost impossible to get that lucky to get the extra in grant money.
