Thanks

When do they tell us our dorm, room mate, etc? When did they tell you guys last year?

Thanks

I think the exact date varies by year…I recall getting my assignment sometime during the summer.

it was the second week of June last year. I think the 15th

dang it, all my friends already know who they are rooming with. I wish I knew.

You could always find yourself a person to share a double with.

Yeah I guess. I would really prefer a single though, oh well. i’ll just look on the facebook group for roommates.

has anyone had an experience where their assigned roommate is just a terrible match?

I went the random roommate route, and even though he was only a 49% match based on that silly little preferences quiz they have you fill out, I could not have asked for a better and more compatible roommate.

Did you request a single on your housing app? If you did, you have a pretty good chance of being assigned to one.

You may want to check your info package to make sure you sign up for housing online before the deadline. If you miss the deadline then you’ll go to end of the line. Every year there are always students who forgot to sign up on time.

I already signed up and yes, I put single as my first choice on housing. I hope to god I get it.

Yep, then there’s a good chance you’ll get a single. I’ll be requesting a single too.

What if my finaid i receive only covers the double rates? would I be charged more if i picked that I prefer a single?

If you get a single, you will be charged the single rate.

Anyone who received a single can request a budget increase to compensate, and will likely be given increased Federal Work Study or Loan Eligibility to cover the cost.

If you request a single and get a single. Your grant money doesn’t get increased to cover the difference. You will have to cover the difference.

If you haven’t maxed out your federal work study, then that will increase. I think the maximum this year is $2,000 for the full year. If you are already getting the full $2,000 in your package, you can request a budget increase and then get a loan, which you will have to pay back at some point.

That is false. Regardless of whether or not you requested a single you can request a budget increase.

Why do people keep spreading this false information?

I think usafa2011dad i right when it comes to housing. You could ask for a budget increase because you need more money for a single, but the school is not going to give you more money in terms of a grant, but would instead increase your loan or work study amount. Another word, it would be your own dime. On the other hand, if you didn’t request for a single, and Cornell assigned you a single because shortage of doubles then you would have ground to argue not to pay for the premium.

@chendrix

I’m not sure what your point is or what you are even calling as false. I never said you couldn’t request a budget increase. I said that if you request a single and get a single, your grant money is not going to increase. FinAid only allows the cost of a double in their Cost of Attendance calculation.

So what is your point, really?

On the other hand. If you request a double or triple or quad and somehow end up with the more expensive single, they will increase your aid by the exact amount, so it costs you nothing.

So, I stand by what I said. I am not spreading false information.

There are also many other things that will allow you to request an increase in budget, but all of them will only mean you can get an increase in work study or a loan, not more grant aid.

What is false is that everyone keeps spreading this idea that you must have requested a double/triple/quad in order to be eligible for the budget increase.

Even if you requested that single, and got it, you are eligible for a budget increase.

I will spell it out:

REGARDLESS of whether or not you requested a single/double/triple/quad/townhouse/apartmentinthesky/fairytalecastle:
You are allowed to submit a budget increase form to Cornell Financial Aid.
You will be given an increase in LOANS or WORK STUDY ELIGIBILITY. Your grant aid will never increase, regardless of circumstances, regardless of whether you requested a double.

chendrix is right. although hardly advertised. same thing for meal plans i imagine?

Yes, exactly the same for meal plans.
