Final Acting Decisions Background - Class of 2022

Hi @sylvansol I think I know who you are now! Congratulations on BU. I believe our kids are fb friends  They all seem to be friends  I will inbox you

@actingdreams such a great story! What amazing choices he had, and to be in such a highly regarded program, near home…that’s such a blessing! Take it from someone whose D is across the country…it ain’t easy!

Thank you @marg928 It’s been so great going through all of this with you! I can imagine it to be exciting at first but then it’s difficult. The scary part is when they realize that they want to live where they are after college. I’m Very sure that my son will not remain here but it’s nice that I can catch his shows on a discount for a few more years

@actingdreams - I copied your quote “Until you are ready to admit to yourself exactly what it is that you want, you will experience confusion." And put it on the notes section of my phone. My S needs to hear this. Congratulations again to you and your S. This has been a great an impressive journey for your S. I look forward to seeing him on the big screen some day. (Please update cc before the movie comes out so we know!).

@MomofJ5 Thank you so much! I can’t wait to hear about your son’s decision. This has been a crazy journey for sure. Thank you! Sometimes you have to remember to be true to yourself. We can get swept up with keeping up with what is supposed to be the norm, forgetting that art is supposed to be subjective. We’re supposed to be different, we’re supposed to take different paths. Our Journeys are supposed to be colorful and hot and cold and warm, stressful and gleeful. If they aren’t, no one would find us interesting and I couldn’t imagine the same story or journey being told. It makes for a less interesting life  Good Luck with your choices! Can’t wait! xx

@actingdreams I am so happy for you and your family! DePaul sounds perfect! I wish we had passed the prescreen! I have a concern about what you stated about BU. My son has some close African-American friends and I hope he makes more at BU. When we visited it looked to be an extremely diverse campus. Anything I should be aware of?
And it is interesting that you noted your S was straight. My S is straight too and has many gay & transgender friends in the drama dept at school. He noted at the Elon and UO MT callbacks that he was the only male there (including the faculty) that was straight. I wonder if that little fact made a bit of a difference in his rejection or not. Many schools like to put similar people together…my S is a bit shy except when performing and he said the other guys at those auditions were very loud and social. He was not putting them down, he has no bias against them at all but I wonder if that swayed the panel if a little. We will never know, of course.

HI @HopeinMT Thank You! we have plenty of gay friends. I was pointing out that the majority of AA in MT are not straight (but are very talented singing/dancing in that he is not). We received many emails from BU about their diversity pool and things that they were improving on. The comments were from previous years (more recent) than not that involved Police harassment while walking (A LOT)…the gay part was referenced to MT only  My S just said he’d never fit in with singing and dancing (and they are typically really good) During Unifieds, there were very few of him (straight, African American).I could see that there would be an advantage but there are also disadvantages on a social level. I hope that things begin to improve even more. I’m sure BU is wonderful but my S just wasn’t wanting to see it. We also have friends who have resided there for a decade for work. It’s beautiful but not always pleasant. I’m sure things will improve over time.

He wasn’t rejected from BU, he withdrew his application prior to auditions

Hi @HopeinMT! My S is straight and he was accepted to Elon and will be attending in the fall. I don’t think sexual orientation mattered there. My S is very reserved until he gets to know you so he was never loud or social during audition day.

@Griffilus thanks for sharing and congratulations again. I think the post about MT went sideways. Sexual orientation doesn’t matter. I was stating that there weren’t many Straight Black Males for Mt nor for acting in that case @HopeinMT

@actingdreams, HUGE congratulations to your son!!! DePaul sounds totally AMAZING and so perfect for him! I have loved following his extraordinary journey, and look forward to seeing him on the big screen on a few years!

On a more sober note, thank you for so candidly sharing the additional layers of concern that minority students must consider when evaluating a program. It was very eye-opening. One tends to think of theater as so welcoming and embracing of everyone, but just as in the rest of society, we unfortunately have a long way to go, particularly with unconscious bias and microagressions (i.e. a school going out of its way to emphasize to your son that black students are welcome, instead of talking to him about his ACTING and why he wants to come to the school.) The fact that they saw his race as the first and foremost thing about him is telling.

But the happier point is that he had so many fantastic choices and picked the one that’s perfect for him! I’m so happy for him and for you!

And I agree with the person who said that you are one of the kindest and most supportive people on this forum. It is always a pleasure reading your posts.

@actorparent1 thank you so much for the support! Im sure my news and story may have come as a shock but! There always seems to be one. Thank you again. Im happy this exhausting part is over and we did not have to mortgage out home now :)) I cant wait to hear the final decisions from everyone and hope someone gained tidbits from our very long experience

My D and I attended a studio production of “Master Harold and the Boys” at Tisch Friday night it was co-sponsored by the Atlantic Theatre school student of color affinity group. The talkback afterward was keenly intelligent. Already the play feels like an old paradigm. I think our children’s generation will have a chance to write and perform in new works that help us all process and deepen our understanding of each other lives. I look forward to new works around difficult issues.

Also the acting by the students was world class. Stunning.
@actingdreams I’m sorry your S and my D won’t be studying together (she probably will be at Tisch at Atlantic) but I am grateful for your honesty about all the concerns parents face in helping their children navigate life. Diversity in the student body is very important for my D also. Depaul sounds great!

@123Mimi no apologizing needed. I think I just wanted to share a perspective of what it is like to be a minority in this business (or any business). I am so glad that you had a great time at Tisch! Maybe in the future, our kids will work together! Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m certain Tisch was amazing. I think any of these great programs will produce great work. Probably why it’s so hard to get into them  Can’t wait to hear about future endeavors for your D

@actingdreams Hi! I know this thread is mostly for parents but I tend to lurk lol. I am all set to commit to The Boston Conservatory as a Contemporary Theater major but as an AA female, I couldn’t help but be a little concerned reading your comments. I love BOCO and I definitely want to go there but I really would love some advice maybe on how to handle it? Would you mind pm’ing me? I would have just messaged you but I still haven’t figured out how to work this site lol.

@BoojieTheatre congratulations for Your BOCO acceptance. This is a board to just post your final decisions and I dont want to shift from it

@actingdreams - so happy for your S! It sounds like a great choice all around. I just wanted to mention that D’s audition with The New School was also focused on social justice issues rather than acting and she’s an ORM in so many ways - one of those dime-a-dozen white straight female MT-focused actors from California. So the oddness of their audtions may just be who they are! She came back shaking her head!!!

@CaMom13 :)) I can imagine! LOL. I didn’t elaborate on here but the auditor asked him one situation he had been in before (like do you want to hear the monologue or not ??) lol Good luck with your D  can’t wait to hear where she lands

@actingdreams - she’s landed! She’s already committed to Tisch, she was admited to the NSB and we couldn’t be happier.

@CaMom Congratulations on Tisch NSB! I’m not sure where mine will land but wherever- a little part of me wishes to be young again…I would choose NYU. I was really feeling it (still am) on the last visit. Fantastic school. Your daughter will have it all there and flourish and fly!! Such a journey for us all. I hope for a peaceful settled feeling soon. Feeling king of exhausted but love to read about all this good fortune! Beginnings Rock!

KIND of exhausted- I do not feel like a king at all…
