Sorry to bother people again with this question. But since the last time, I received 12500 from GT's Presidential Scholarship Program (I was notified today). I double deposited in UMN and GT just in case I got the PSP. Now, I am truly stuck between the two. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Situation:
Double deposited in GT and UMN--This was my parent's idea. I was pretty much going to UMN as I had a scholarship there and in the honors program. But my parents didn't want me to give up on GT and getting any money.

Financial: 10000 from UMN per year. 12500 from GT. The percentage of scholarship to overall fees per year is about the same at both.

Intangibles: I loved both UMN and GT. The programs are both stellar for chemical engineering. Now with this added situation, it's just really confusing about what I should do.

If you need any more info, please let me know.
Thanks in advance.

Kaony…Sorry you’ve got such a tough call to make…but congrats on being in the enviable position of being able to choose between two fantastic schools!! They’re very similar in many respects (great overall university, major metro area, top level engineering programs) so maybe the biggest difference would be the weather. Are you a cold weather person or a warm weather person? Would one put you further away from family than the other, and would that be a factor for you?

I’m guessing you’d have some great internship and recruiting opportunities at both schools, especially for Chem Eng. Not much help there.

Guess we’ll have to keep it simple. U of Minn has more consistency in its mascot than GT does. Gophers are Gophers are Gophers…while GT can’t make up it’s mind between Yellow Jackets or Ramblin’ Wreck. You don’t want a university that has an identity crisis do you? Go Gophers!!!

Haha i was literally in the exact same boat. Except i’m not legit enough to get the Presidential from Gtech. My options were Ut Austin Engineering Honors, UMN Honors, and Gtech Honors. UT got cut real quick cause its expensive. But deciding betweent UMN and Gtech was very hard. Thats funny that your chemical engineering too, and then you already know that these two schools are very highly ranked ( i think like 3rd and 5th) so there really isn’t that much difference.

I chose UMN because i loved the visit people and atmosphere. Gtech really did (no offense) have a nerdy vibe. Also even though i’m not planning on switching, UMN has a great array of other majors (econ, pharmacy, etc.). I wanted to go to a big school with plenty of stuff to do. It does get cold outside but there are plenty of stuff to do so I wouldnt be too worried about that. Good luck with your choice! I know how hard it is

I used to live in MN, so I’m impartial to either cold or warm weather. But more importantly, it seems that constancy of a mascot’s name will be my deciding factor.

It’s nice to hear that other people had a similar choice. What specifically about GT caused you to accept UMN?

Well nothing really specific from GT was like a sore thumb, but i’d have to say the turning factor was that Gtech was a little small and stuffy for me whereas UMN was so big and it seemed like there was endless stuff to do.

Minneapolis/St. Paul is also a dream city - an incredibly affordable, mid/large city, with a small town feel. The campus atmosphere is great, and when you get older, you have the opportunity to find your niche neighborhood throughout the Twin Cities, with campus only a short bus/light rail ride away.

On top of all of that, you have the biggest intangible - Minnesota Nice. Yes, you may have to deal with snow, but you also get to deal with 50,000 smiling faces every day.
