Current students, do most classes follow the University exam schedule? Is there any flexibility in taking finals at a time other than the scheduled time? My daughter has two exams scheduled for Wed, Dec. 21, so she would have to fly out on Thursday. The air fare on Thursday is triple what it is on Tuesday and double what it is on Wednesday! Just wondering if it is possible to take exams earlier? Thanks!

In my experience it has depended on the class. For my large lecture classes they made sure to tell us that all tests had to be taken on the day they were given, and if you missed it then too bad. They also made sure to tell us that if you had already boughten your ticket home and it conflicted it was not considered a viable reason to take the test on another day. However, for my Chinese exam the teacher was teaching multiple sections with the final on different days, and we were allowed to take it with any of the sections. Personally I’ve always left the day of my last final, even when it was an evening final.

yes, the schedule is generally followed. only in extreme valid circumstances are you allowed to change your schedule. however, what i do not understand is how you already have your final exam schedule. it usually doesn’t get set until a month or a month and a half into the semester.

I’m confused why you have a final exam schedule already as well. Was it on a posted syllabus?
But yes, it does depend on the class. If you have a conflict (i.e. more than 2 exams on the same day) then you are allowed to take the exam on a different day. However, most professors (especially in large lectures) will tell you that there are no exceptions–all exams must be taken on the chosen date.

most profs don’t allow you to take your exam around travel issues either. it has to be a legitimate emergency. Don’t worry fishymom…I’d wager the flight prices are going to go up and down before December.

The final exam schedule is posted on the Registrar’s page: [Boston University - Office of the University Registrar - Important Dates- Final Exam Schedule - Fall 2009](http://www.bu.edu/reg/dates/examdates-fall11.html) All you have to do is match it up with your class schedule.

oh, while that schedule is there, it is not always followed. professors have to stay a few days after the final exam is administered in order to calculate and issue final grades. so, sometimes they’ll fight for an earlier exam date. this was the case for my statistics class. my exam was scheduled for the last day of exams but i ended up having it the first day of exams.

some classes also have papers instead of final exams.

Thanks for all the responses! I stalked JetBlue for a month or more and finally found a decent fare for Wed. Evening, 12/21. So, even if she does end up with that 3-5pm exam, she can still make the flight. And if she lucks out and gets an earlier exam schedule, I won’t mind paying to change her flight to an earlier one, since the fare was so good. I’m still stalking JetBlue for Thanksgiving!
