FINAL: Please help me build my safety, match, and reach schools ... bad GPA

Please help me build my safety, match, and safety schools. A lot of you probably are going to say community college as my safety and that's it but come on, there HAS to be 4-year colleges out there that will accept me. I know it for sure. Onto my grades, SAT, and activities ...

GPA: 2.01 (C average .. I know, it's bad. Please don't make fun of me. -_-)
SAT's: 1700/2400 (I guess that's slightly above average?)
Ethnicity: Asian-American
Extracurriculars/Volunteer/Activities/Work Experience: Spanish Club member, volunteer at public library, tae kwon do, learned the piano and drums early in freshman year, church mission trip member in 2007, worker at my father's dry cleaners over the summer, breakdancing (really helped me build my confidence in performing in front of others and meeting new cool people)
What I plan on studying: I am not sure about this. Many things came into my mind such as business, journalism, engineering ... I just don't know what's right for me. But I'm a student that loves writing, writing, and writing. I am a good, creative essay writer for sure.

Only interested in going to college in NJ, NY, and possibly CT. PA is ok too but not completely sure about that. But the schools I've been looking at are ... (I don't know if any of you have an idea of any of these schools but here it goes) .... Seton Hall, Rutgers-Newark Campus, Pace, Mercy College, St.John's, Penn State (of course NOT the main university campus), Fairleigh Dickinson, Long Island U-Brooklyn, SUNY Old Westbury, NJIT, NYIT, CUNY City Tech, CUNY John Jay ........ Feel free to recommend me some more colleges. More, the better, and less stress for me. I hate having limited choices.

thank you, much appreciated.

Honestly, I don’t think any safety 4 year schools exist for someone with a 2.01 GPA. I think all of those schools may be a reach for you… sorry O___o

Look yosup first off, I’m going to say that you are wrong. It IS possible. I got plenty of recommendations before but I just completely forgot them … although they weren’t “brand name” schools, I still got some recommendations of colleges that could accept me. Second, if you have nothing to contribute but saying “Oh, you don’t have a chance, I’m sorry” then close the window or not post anything at all … if there aren’t any 4 year schools that can accept me … and by aren’t any, I literally mean NONE … then I’m clearly wasting my time preparing hard for the SAT’s in October and for my college essay.

You should try to remember who suggested schools to you before and go back to them for suggestions again. You should try to raise your SAT scores as much as you can to increase your chances. If you can break 2000, then I’m sure there will be more than a few opportunities. Work as hard as you can for the October test, it is possible to make a 300+ jump. You didn’t mention any awards or recognitions for your ECs. If you have them, you certainly should highlight them; otherwise, try to get at least an award or a recognition for an activity. Find a way to show adcoms that you are good at writing. Btw, my son breakdances too. It is a cool thing just to watch him perform.

^Well, any college recommendations? Anyone?

Hmm…this is my suggestion: work VERY hard first semester, try to pull up your GPA as much as you can, because it’s dragging you pretty far down. You probably have an alright shot at SUNYs or CUNYs…maybe you could add Shippensburg…it’s pretty easy to get into and it’s not a bad school. Good Luck!

There are many schools that take nearly all comers. Here are a few in New England that might work for you. Look for third and fourth tier colleges on the US News and World Report.

Slight Reach
Springfield College Springfield, Mass
Western New England College - Mass
University of Hartford - Hartford, Ct
St. Anselms College in NH
University of Southern Maine

Matches
NH - Keene State College, Plymouth State College, Colby Sawyer College (New London NH)
VT - Johnson State College
NH University in Manchester NH

Safety
New England College - Henniker, NH

Ara… your gpa is really bad. Try to get to study a lot of APs to boost your score up!!! But I think your SAT is good enough for some schools, moreover you have ok ECs. (I’m the total contrary of you - good GPA, horrible SATs) >_>

I’ve told you this before, but athletes dont get into schools with 2.01 GPAs. I dont know how you could possibly get admitted to any college of any academic merit.

As Daffmom said, there are many schools that take almost all applicants-- any many private colleges especially that take all who can pay. How much is your family able to spend per year?

See if your local community college has any guaranteed transfer agreements with 4-year schools. That’s likely the best way to go, saves money and gets you a better degree.

Check out some of the SUNY universities.

What about Nichols in Mass?

Only SUNY school I would be interested in going is Stony Brook, Old Westbury, or Buffalo. Am I doomed for all three of those SUNY’s?

Most likely not at Stony Brook and Buffalo, but maybe Old Westbury. You’d have a much better chance if you went to community college and did well, then transferred.

You should probably do the guaranteed transfer thing with a community college. There are some out there that have it with really good schools, or try to go to a branch campus of a good public school with guaranteed transfer in 2 years (like penn state).

I second the 4th tier US News thing.

Or why not go to community college and actually transfer into a college with a bit more academic merit then the ones listed so far.

How did you only manage a 2.01 >_<

OP, I do think you have a chance at the SUNYs you listed, but it won’t be easy. Give it a try, though.

If you work hard at the beginning of your senior year and raise your SAT score, you definitely have a shot.

“How did you only manage a 2.01”

Popnpoper, leave the guy alone. Offer something constructive, offer a dose of reality, but don’t just offer some semi-rhetorical, snide comment.

It’s a legit question; I went to a top public school and pulled a 3.3 without trying at all. You’d basically have to skip school to pull a 2.01
