Finalize My List?

I thought I had it locked down, but here I am having a sudden change of heart. So here we go...

I'm applying to 8 schools (I will not go over that number, I would consider under). My major will either be environmental science or geology, and I will need a master's to do anything with that, so that's a consideration.

The List:
-Texas A&M (auto admit)
-UTexas (auto admit)
-UWisconsin
-UWashington-App doesn't even open until October/November so plenty of time to mull that over
-Smith College-<3
-Mt Holyoke-Interview today, no turning back now
-Cornell-Hahaha
-Michigan State <--My biggest concern, considering switching it to UFlorida for a few reasons including parents, weather, geology school strength, reputation, and 5 year BS/MS program. Would like some opinions.

The Numbers:
GPA: 4.7 (3.9 UW)
Rank: 15/575
SAT:2100 (690R 700M 710W)
ACT: Just did it, think I did really well. Probably around a 34?
EC: Band (with substantial leadership), newspaper (with leadership), NHS, academic team, underwater basket weaving, throwing bread at ducks
AP: enough. Scholar w/ distinction

You tha realest. Thanks for your input.

Looks good and definitely realistic. I think you could have applied to a few more reaches, as you rank, grades and tests scores (assuming your ACT estimate is on the mark) are quite competitive.

I would suggest switching out Michigan state. Maybe Colorado Boulder? I hear their enviro program is good. But I’m by no means an expert.

If you’re auto admit for UT Austin, I wouldn’t apply to any OOS publics.

I hope my guess is right, that’s about where my practice scores fell.

I definitely see your point, but my dad hates UT so I don’t know that I will actually be allowed to go there. If he liked it, I would probably just take a one and done approach.

Of course it’s up to you but- I would second teen’s suggestion. This is your life, so your dad’s opinion is obviously secondary. Whether or not he likes UT shouldn’t affect your decision.

Except when that opinion controls the wallet. I’m working on him, we’ll see what happens. I just don’t want to put all of my eggs in that basket.

Can you afford all of these? If you haven’t yet, you might want to run the Net Price Calculators on the financial aid webpage of each school. I do think you are a great candidate for significant merit aid at Mount Holyoke. Have you considered Carleton?

I haven’t considered Carleton, I’m digging the all girls school vibe right now. My family owns a small business and I’ve heard they don’t account for that very well. My parents have told me to apply to where I want to go and then we’ll do a cost-benefit analysis at the end to figure out which schools they’ll pay for. I’d rather they just tell me how much money I have, but I don’t run their lives so oh well.

I have a small business, and what I did with the net price calculators is added the business assets in as if they were my own personal assets. That might be overkill at some schools, but it worked pretty well for us. You really should have them run them before you go to the trouble to apply, you could be wasting your time if they can’t pay for some of the places on your list, especially those that don’t offer merit aid.

Since you’re digging the all girl’s school vibe, have you considered Wellesley? No idea how their enviro program/geo program stacks up but you can cross register at Harvard and MIT, which I’d imagine would have strong classes in all the hard sciences.

I adore Wellesley, but there is no merit aid (there’s a little at smith) and I know that full pay isn’t feasible for us. :(

But on a brighter note, I’m about to leave for my Mt. Holyoke interview!

Good luck! Are you interviewing on campus?

Thanks! I think it was decent. no, an admissions officer was in town.
