Finals Week

[im a freshman]
so finals are in 2 weeks and i had a few questions, as these are my first finals.
I know that everyone is studying a lot for finals, but is it that big of a deal?

i think i phrased that badly, but the way i am thinking is along the lines of "last minute studying"
Like i am assuming that people who are studying during finals weeks [24/7] are the last minute people/procrastinators? and this leads me to the question of finals and is it that big of a deal...

My current plan is to take this week and next week to studying about 45 minutes a day per class [i have 3 final tests, 1 speech [for public speaking]] so it would be 2 hours and 15 minutes per day [plus or minus] instead of the whole 24/7 thing.

So what i am asking is, would i still have to study 24/7 [or along those extreme lines] if i study a little bit every day.

[im sorry it sounds confusing, but i am really confused right now about finals :/]

It’s definitely good to space it out like you’re planning on doing. But don’t think that will allow you to just coast during finals week, hahaha. My finals weeks were always brutal with at least one all nighter even though I kept up on the reading throughout the quarter and didn’t procrastinate, for the most part. Make study guides, figure out what works best for you. And get at least a little bit of sleep. Good luck!

thanks UCSanDiego! that was a great reply.
maybe i haven’t experienced the pain, but im assuming it’s just like a cumulative exam worth much more…and i just dont get the hype about it… i can’t wrap my head around why students need all nighters even [in your case]

i think i’ll try my way first lol without any extra studying / all nighters or anything like that. but i will definitely take your advise on study guides. I’m planning to set up what exactly i should know/do in preparation for each exam.
like for my MMW class, i figure I’ll do a study guide that makes me compare and contrast various civilizations, laws, and stuff like that.

but thank you for the tips and info  Finals Week~ something to be definitely nervous about, but I’m not there yet. [i dont know if this is a good thing or bad thing]

I studied pretty regularly last year and didn’t need to pull any all-nighters. I still studied more than usual though.

I second the one part of ucsandiego915: “figure out what works best for you” best advice you can give anyone.

Personally: I’ve never studied earlier than the friday before finals week. I feel like if you’ve studied regularly throughout the quarter, you already know the stuff in your head. This might just apply to me, so don’t necessarily follow :stuck_out_tongue: I’ve never pulled an all nighter even through what you call the “cramming” schedule, and my first year I took 17+ units (4-5 classes). I started the Friday before and pretty much pulled 8-10 hour study days straight till my finals.

General tips: Get into a routine a few days before finals week. I don’t know if this applies to everyone, but a few days before my first final I synchronize myself to the time I’ll take it. If it’s at 11 in the morning, I’ll wake up at 9-10 for three days before and study the material for that final during 11:30-1. That way when I actually take the final, it’ll be automatic because I’ve already “taken” it before, if you know what I mean.

Check your class syllabi and make sure you know how much your final is worth! I’ve had friends who’ve gotten straight A’s on everything else but got a B- on the final and ended up with a B in the class. Know how much it’s worth. I like to calculate the grade I need obsessively before because it gives me the pressure I need to study, but that’s definitely not for everyone hahah.

Even if you study a little bit each night, you will still need to spend mass amounts of time the night before each final studying. The stuff you studied earlier probably slipped your memory. Studying in little bits at a time is very very helpful, but everybody crams. It’s kind of a way of life during finals. You suck it up for a week and just remember, you have winter break after that, so get your **** done now and relax later. In my opinion, cramming is pretty helpful.

^Exactly, that’s what I was trying to convey. Haha I didn’t mean to freak you out, OP, sorry if I came across that way!
P.S. Speaking from experience, study guides for MMW are VERY helpful - great idea.
