does Mcgill only base it's grades on the final exam as many European universities do? Or is it like American universities where some homework, some papers, midterms, projects etc. all count toward your grade??

It depends. As far as I know, most classes do not base the grade solely on the final, though some classes will have a grading scheme of the form best of x% homework+ y% midterm+ z% final or 100% final.

i have another question on the topic of finals/exams. i know it's something that will vary depending on the course but generally speaking what are the exams like? in England our exams are basically a series of long essays (though again, this is coming from a social science point of view) but my understanding is a lot of North American uni's have multiple choice exams. so what type should i look forward to stessing over?

mutiple choice exams are popular in science- but in my humanity courses all exams have been essays short answers identification etc.

Again, exams vary a lot from class to class. Multiple choice exams are reserved mostly for some usually very large, low level classes, and very few exams are purely multiple choice answers. Essays, term projects, take-home exams, and your standard array of factual questions, short and long problems 3 hours exams are common.

Most science (life sciences) exams are pretty much all multiple choice, usually worth 70-80% of your final mark, depending on whether or not the class has a lab, and also depends on level I agree. A few life sciences courses have short answers...arts courses like english usually have essays at the end, I'd say two. And a few short answers as well.

most classes have midterms. They usually comprise of 20-30% of your overall mark. Some courses have a weekly quiz/assignments eg maths, bio. which usually take up 10%. If your in the sciences, chem, physics and bio can have labs that usually take from 10-20% of the overall grade. The rest is based on the final.

no midterms??!

yeh some don't. my anatomy class last year had a coursework assignment making up 10% and the rest was for the lab and final.
