ive been doing research on these two majors, and it seems to me like they are very similar. They both involve management of resources, financial predictions, and investment analysis. It seems as though a finance major has brader career options, in that they dont HAVE to go into accounting, which is what it seems like with an accounting major. Im just curious if this is true, and what are some career options for someone majoring in finance. (Im planning on attending UMD in the fall, and cant decide between the two majors.)

Accounting can potentially open more doors than finance. Usually, accounting majors can do what finance majors do (training is sufficient), but finance majors cannot become CPAs without the right coursework. Also, too many finance professionals don't know their financial statements because they never went beyond introductory accounting. My school's career office says that investment bankers, contrary to popular belief, need more of an accounting background than finance.

But, of course, if you can double, that will be ideal.

Go with accounting if your going to UMD.

so do people normally go to grad school after undergrad or find a job and then go back to get a mba?

they usually go work from what i read because you have to have work experience inorder to get into grad school unless your are really smart or in some sort of ba/ma program.

^^at least for top mba programs, it is almost unheard of for someone to go directly from undergrad to their MBA. The MBA admissions process relies heavily on your resume (resume = work experience), not so much your transcripts from university.

even for accouting?

even for accouting?

If your talking about Macc programs, then you don't need any work experience. If your talking about top mba programs, then it is HIGHLY recommended that you have work experience.

bump...anyone else?

a lot of you has recommended double in accounting and finance.

how difficult is it to double in accounting and finance?

im not sure, but im pretty sure most schools dont let you double if one of the majors is accoutning because accounting takes a lot..thats what ive seen people say
