I'm looking to major in Finance and/or Accounting at Kelley School of Business (IU). I've been doing research and I pretty much want to double major/minor in something else. I absolutely want to minor in Math because I've been hearing good things about math. Finance was my first choice, but after some research, Accounting appeals to me too. I'm in Financial Accounting and it's not as bad as people make it seem.

I've heard that if you major in Accounting, you can still get a job in Finance (probably not as easy) since some parts of Accounting cover a little bits and pieces on Financing. Is there a point in double majoring in Finance/Accounting? Does it broaden the horizon for possible jobs and would it increase salary? I've also been looking to POSSIBLY double major/minor in Math because I've been hearing good stuff about Math majors.

Here's what is possible:

Double major Finance/Accounting minor in Math
Finance with major/minor in Math
Accounting with major/minor in Math

Obviously the first choice is very rigorous and I'll be working my ass off. I'll be doing more extensive research later, but I'm just wondering, would a double major in Finance/Accounting will be helpful? Would the math major in replace of the other business help more? I'm assuming math minor is going to help regardless.

That’s a great combination! In fact, I’m considering the exact same thing i.e. Accounting/Finance major with Math minor.
I went and talked to my Math professor a couple of days ago, she said I should totally go for it. It would definitely be a plus point on your resume!

It is not rigourous at all! If you major in accounting at Kelley, you need to take 3 more classes to complete a second major in finance. 3 extra classes! It is more rigourous to get the math minor than the added finance major. If you plan it out right, you need two extra classes to get an econ minor.

3 extra classes to get a finance major
2 extra classes to get an econ minor

Business people are generally impressed by math majors. I certainly am.

Math has much greater usefulness in finance than in accounting. Basic accounting is a very useful thing for anyone but intermediate and advanced level accounting are for those who want to work as accountants.

Quite a few people in the world of finance are limited in what they can do because they didn’t go far enough in math.

I’ve been a licensed CPA since 1981. If I had it to do over I would choose finance.

It is 2 additional econ classes from a finance major. E305 (money and banking) will count towards your finance major and econ minor, E370 (stats) will count towards your econ minor (and is required for any business major), and E321 (intermediate) is required for an econ minor.

i’m viewing my options for a business admin degree with a focus on “something”

for finance … how far do you actually go in terms of math?

i personally like the challenge presented by higher levels of math (i feel empty without a semester of math or something… i keep wanting to max out)

but don’t get me wrong though… i’m no math whiz… i try to learn and understand the math.
