Hi, I am currently a Finance Major and I have a rather big decision to make. Right now, I am deciding whether or not to sign a committing contract towards ROTC. I love everything in it, but I am also concerned. With the contract comes an 8 year commitment towards the reserve which I am fine with but I fear that it will affect my ability to maintain a job in finance once I am done with school. Does anyone have an opinion on how companies will view me due to this?

Although you will probably be a lot older than other applicants for the same job, I think being an officer in any branch will give you a clear advantage. Concerning reserve duty, I think it will depend on the company. They shouldn’t discriminate against you because you have a commitment to the military, but I believe they can get away with doing so.

Thanks for the opinion. I guess it would be pretty hard to have the best of both in this scenario.

I’m friends with a guy in the military and he has been able to find work easily in the civilian world, even with his military duties. He has since taken a full-time job with the military, but before that he got a job as a loan officer only a week or 2 in his job search. Companies love people with military and leadership experience, which are things you will most likely have with this committing contract.
