My taxes are 99 percent done except two small 1099's are not coming. I want to wait for them so that I can submit a completed package based on actual numbers which will not need to be amended later. However I worried about the deadline (2/15) approaching. So today I called the school. This is what they said, " Don't worry about being one or two days late. We will still consider it."

I know you can just used estimated numbers and update later. But which is better, send early and change later, or wait for all the numbers and send it one or two days late?

What is everyone else doing? If everyone else is sending in early and update later, when my FAFSA goes in, all the money will already be distributed and not much left?

Anyone with experience on that, thanks in advance for your advice!

I would suggest you do your FAFSA with estimates and update ASAP. It sounds like you have excellent 2011 tax and income information. Just do it now using the “will file”'status. Then get those taxes done in the next couple of weeks, and update. That way you will meet the filing deadline.

Thanks so much, Thumper1!
Can I ask you one more question: what about the CSS profile? Do I have to send both the FAFSA and CSS together, if not, my application is not considered complete and they will not work on it anyway? But if I do, I can not update the CSS later online, so it will not be consistent with the FAFSA?

Do you have online access to the accounts that are missing the 1099’s? If so, or if you can set that up, many banks/brokerages have the 1099 info online.

Thanks sk8rmom.
Yes, I checked online. 1099 for 2011 is not there. I called. They said they have not yet “run” it. Once they run it it will be online.

My question - hope someone helps me - is that if FAFSA, CSS, and tax return are all due at the same time, like Feb 15, just sending in the FAFSA and CSS without the tax return, will the financial aid office start to work on the application just based on the " will file" FAFSA?

What is your school deadline? You need to meet that. No, the Profile cannot be updated online, but yes the Profile CAN be updated. Each school has a procedure for doing so. We filed both our FAFSA and Profile using the “will file” status and updated when our taxes were done (which we did VERY promptly when our kids were in college).

If you will have everything all set from those 1099s in the next week, then I personally think you can wait to do the Profile until this coming week. Just don’t do it at midnight on the 15th! Get it done ASAP.

Thanks Thumper1! Thanks so much for your help! With your advice I now know what I will do - submit the FAFSA now with the “will file” status, wait for the 1099 which they say should be ready the 10th or the 13th, finish up the taxes on the 10th or the 13th, submit the profile with the final numbers, file the return and send a copy to the school, then update FAFSA online. Sounds good?
In case I still don’t get the 1099 on the 13th, I will submit the profile with the “will file” status on the 13th, then pencil the final numbers in (whenever they are out) and send the revised profile through the mail ( or scan it and email ).
Wow, whatever their procedure is, I now come up with my procedure!
