Let’s begin with a simple fact: I have now uploaded 26 documents - not counting our multi-page tax returns – to IDOC so that our son can be considered for financial aid. But the College Board wants more. He worked in the summer of 2016 as an independent contractor (so his employer would not have to pay Medicare and Soc Security texes) and now the College Board wants a copy of his 2016 1099 form. The fact that all the numbers from that form are on his 2016 schedule C EZ that I already uploaded notwithstanding, they want a copy of the document. But the employer only sent one copy and my son mailed it to the feds with his 2016 returns and did not keep a photo copy. Too bad for you, says IDOC; we want it. Is this not a kind of lunatic institutional shake down? Sorry, I just needed to vent.
Your kid needs to get another copy if the 1099. Why did he send it to the IRS? Half of my kid’s income is in muktiple 1099s, and they are all in her files here at the house.
Exactly…why did the 1099 forms get mailed to the IRS. They don’t want that stuff anymore.
Keep copies of all tax documents for at least 7 years
Go to IRS.gov and you can download a copy of the 1099 as well as a copy of his 1040
