Financial Aid Appeal Denied

—REALLY LONG BUT PLEASE READ---- I went through a few hardships at the beginning of my second semester of college. During my second semester of college I went through very unbearable mental health problems.

Even though I exceeded during my first semester I could not managed to keep my grades up due to my symptoms. As to many people have a choice to moving back with their parents, mine was quite different due to the fact that I live in a very abusive home with my stepdad who would’ve kicked me out of the house if I came back. In other words, I was homeless and did not know where to go so I decided to try to ignore my symptoms try to do the material.

Boy was I wrong. I failed each in every class which cost me my scholarship and financial aid. 8 months later after many life style changes like diet, doing yoga, and making healthy choicesI, and getting treatment, my symptoms went completely into remission which I am very lucky to say that today.

The only problems is my last 2 semesters. The 2nd semester of my freshmen year was a complete disaster which I take blame for, but hey I was very sick. Even though I completely failed my 2nd semester of my freshman year, I was granted permission to keep going with my classes after writing a letter of appeal to the dean of academics.

My 1st semester of freshmen year went really well except for one thing… My stupid professor. Since I did bad my 2nd semester of my freshmen year I couldn’t sign up or attend any classes since I was in the process of getting my academic appeal approved.

When my appeal was approved I was two weeks late into the semester and every single professor accepted me into their classrooms except… one. That is when everything started even going more downhill. Since that professor did not wanted to take me in even after talking to him and explaining everything I had to go through he said no… which really makes me think how many professors do not even care.

I was supposed to take 4 classes but since he denied me I was only taking 3. This put my GPA on jeopardy since the whole point of probation was to get your grades up to a 2.0 or higher, taking 3 classes was not going to bring it to that level due to the fact that I did so bad during my 2nd semester of freshmen year.

Even though I aced my 3 classes my GPA was 1.90 so my financial aid advisor said did I not met the academic standards to be able to receive financial and advised me to take an alternative loan which I am totally not doing and now I am so stressed because I feel that my dreams of changing and making an impact in this world are gone.

My questions are… what are my options? (If I have any) and how can a professor do that to a student? Would’t that violate school policies? I honestly do not know what to do at this point, Anything will really help.

Thank you so much,

Congratulations that you were able to get through everything and healthy again that’s the most important thing is your health.

Anyway your problem I don’t know your school polices but at my school after certain period when semester starts it is the professor decision to allow you into their class. So if they say no then well tough luck. Also when the professor did not let you take the class why didn’t you speak to your financial advisor about it or try to find another class to register for in?

I guess your options are to continue and find aid maybe from relatives or take out loans or outside scholarships.

Get a job and switch to part time.

Transfer to a community college and then work on your grades and then transfer back to your initial school

Take a year off or two save some money for your schooling.

Maybe try talking to advisor again and explain the situation about your home life.

Whatever you choose I bid you good luck

Also you don’t give up on your dreams this is just a bump in the road.

When one professor didn’t allow you in a class…did you try to enroll in something different? There must have been other courses available…with professors who, would, allow you to register late.

At this point, you can talk to an academic advisor…but I’m not sure what they will tell you.

Switching to a community college, working and attending college part time…both good options.

Did you look into taking a retroactive withdrawal for your second semester? Were your health issues documented (treatment at the counseling center or outside doctors)? It is a long shot but if you have documentation it might be worth checking.

Thank you supadupafly, I will that into consideration

Thumper, yes tried but it was too late sadly

Noname87, yes I have every single document, I’ve never heard of that option but I will definitely try to see if I have it within my school
