Financial Aid Appeal

Hello, I just wanted other people’s comments on how much more aid or would I even get aid from Pitt.

So recently my cousin passed and the money I personally saved up for my first year of college, was spent helping with the finances for the funeral because she didn’t have insurance.

My mother, a teacher in Alabama, has reviewed her finances and she can’t pay for my and my brother’s college expenses.

I am an out of state student.

Have been offered $16,054.

How much more do you think I may get?

Not much…if any. You are an OOS student.

Did you apply to any instate colleges in Alabama?

Thumper1 are you able to DM me? I have a question about "selling a home vs FAFSA assets’ reply you gave a few years ago. I’m new to this chat and tried to reply but its not letting me. Maybe because it was from 2017
Thank you

What is your family EFC? I doubt Pitt would increase your aid at all maybe 5%, for Pitt 16k is pretty good are you looking for more merit aid or FA?

Yes I did apply to Auburn Uni, but I just don’t like the school culturally.

I am looking for more FA

Have you been accepted to any affordable schools?

Post your question here. I would prefer that over a message. Plus you will get others answers.

I am sorry but Pitt does not give good aid to PA residents. It is highly unlikely that you are going to get an appreciable increase

How much additional aid are you looking fir?

@sybbie719 - Op is OOS and IIRC says they got 16K in aid, not sure how much more they are looking for.

Your FAFSA was correct on the day you filed as you did have the money you saved up in your bank account.

You can ask for professional judgment because you no longer have the money you had save. They might consider spending it on a relative’s funeral as a justified financial emergency, but they most likely will not.

Even if they do, the adjustment would be that the amount you put in as student savings would be adjusted out of your EFC, and then you might, MIGHT, qualify for some additional federal aid like a Pell grant or SEOG or maybe some work study. They really won’t care that your mother has decided she can’t pay for college.

So, what was your EFC? How much did you report as student savings and student earnings?

I am sorry about the loss of your cousin.

the OOS direct cost for Pitt are ~46k (for the school of arts and sciences, the other schools are more expensive)

if Pit gave you a $16k scholarship, are you saying that before your cousin passed you had approx 30k in savings (or minimally $120k to cover the cost of 4 years)?

What would be the basis of your appeal? are you looking for Pitt to increase your aid minimally by 25k/year?
