My child was accepted, but we were not offered any financial aid. We certainly cannot afford the full amount, and I don't want to take out excessive loans. She made a number of excellent colleges and was offered merit based scholarships to a variety of schools. Unfortunately, Kenyon is by far her first choice. I have been told that I can send an appeal letter to both the financial aid department and the admissions department requesting a re-review regarding a merit-based scholarship. Does anyone have experience with this sort of thing at Kenyon?

I doubt she will get more than 10K a year in merit from Kenyon as all of the honors scholarships will have been awarded. What is the highest merit offer she has received thus far? What are her other choices for schools and what is her intended major? Paying 40-50K a year would only be warranted in a few special cases if it that amount cannot easily be paid by your family.

Thanks for responding! Accepted at West Point, UVA; offered $15,000-$20,000 to Allegheny, Washington&Lee, and Washington & Jefferson. Interested in political science?law school. Loved the feel of Kenyon when we visited, especially athletics.

I think UVA or W&L would be solid choices if they are offering your daughter significantly more than Kenyon.

Our daughter currently goes to Kenyon. We got less than a cold shoulder from the financial aid office when I contacted them after admission about aid. I don’t know how they interact with other students, but our experience is that they do not give out much help.

I have to admit that making ends meet to send her there is a challenge but I expect in the end it will be worth it for us.
