My daughter really loves Kenyon college, but I am worried about how expensive it will be considering we did not receive financial aid. She was offered a $20,000 a year merit scholarship at Kenyon College but has received much greater merit offers at less prestigious (yet still good) schools. I am considering emailing to see if they will offer her more merit money. Has anyone done this before at Kenyon? If so, what were the results?
Has she had any notable achievements that they might be able to look at?
You can certainly ask Kenyon…but don’t be disappointed if they say no.
Also, how much do you need? $1000? $10,000?
She’s a pretty impressive student:
-4th in her class
-ACT: 35 (one sitting, w/o tutoring)
-9 APs (all 5s on the four she took last year) and three college courses, everything else as honors
-VP of nhs
-Spanish club pres
-ambassador for a nonprofit organization focused on study abroad and intercultural understanding
-exchange student in Argentina
-viola student (9 years) with involvement in an orchestra and quartet
-FBLA national qualifier
-2 jobs (math tutor and farmers market)
-plus taking care of 50+ animals on our family farm every day
My daughter’s very involved in her school so there are plenty of other things I could add.
She also had great recs and a fantastic essay, too. She’s an incredible writer (ofc I’m biased). I heard they offered some other students 25k a year and I was hoping that maybe they’d consider that for her. I just don’t want to burn any bridges by asking.
I don’t think you’ll burn any bridges by making polite inquiries. It’s very possible that if 5,000 will make the difference in her enrolling— they may consider it— especially since she has a very impressive record. I hope that you do make the inquiry and she enrolls. It’s a magical place— my first year kiddo loves it — more than expected!
You can ask them to reconsider. We did and they granted the request. It wasn’t a ton of money but we were happy about it. We ended up sending our son there and he loves it. Just finishing freshman year and looking forward to going back.
