Wow RPI gave me $33,000 for the RPI medal, I can’t believe it!! Now it would cost $20,000 for me to attend RPI and my parents make 200k a year, unbelievable.

Total cost is almost 59k though :/

From Minnesota. Son got $25K Leadership Award. Not enough to make it worthwhile.

Total fin-aid received from RPI: $42,000 ($7,500 loans)

Family gross income: $0

Estimated family cost to attend Rensselaer: $17,345

guess I’m not attending it…

for those who have not yet got an email, check your portal…

I got $25000 of merit awards, $10000 in loans. Not including the loans, that’s still $25000. It’d probably be cheaper for me to go to schools that offer no merit based aid, just need. I wish I had known about the RPI Medal, that would have definitely helped. Although I loved the school, the cost means I probably won’t attend.

I got $15,000 with the leadership award. I was pleased.

No email. Nothing on the portal. Can I assume I got nothing?

55k total aid(including 7.5k in loans)

4.3k family cost

I’m not sure I’m willing to go almost 50k in debt for RPI…

Everyone should keep in mind that job prospects for an RPI alumni are very high. You’ll be hard pressed to find a university that will give you a full ride, just rationalize it as paying for the degree and experience.

$7,500 loans/year + $18,045 family contribution = $102,180 over 4 years.
Not worth it with a <$50,000 income.

Daughter got aid of $15K for Leadership merit. No other aid.
2250 SAT. #4 or 5 out of 440 for HS class. 10APs.
Not sure if she’ll attend. We were hoping (with fingers crossed) for more merit.

For those with equal or higher merit aid, would you mind posting basic “stats”? Curious as to the correlation.

Good luck to all!!

From what I’ve heard, you can petition -once- for an increase in terms of financial aid/merit money. BUT do not believe me right away and double check this.

Stats: Asian Female, CA
SAT: 2010 (2090 superscore)
GPA: I think it was 4.17 for 9-11, Ranked 59 [at time of application]
After midyear report, gpa 4.25, ranked 40 [6 weighted classes]
Passed 3 APs [Calc AB, Enviro Sci, Chem], in progress for 5, self studying 2

15.9k Leadership award. That’s nice, but 40k + cost of flying back and forth? Cal Poly SLO or Pomona beats that any day.

@Billysdad

White/Asian/Hispanic

For those of you who aren’t satisfied with the financial aid offer, I HIGHLY recommend pushing RPI for more money. My dad, who is a guidance counselor, was told by a long time officer from Sarah Lawrence who is very familiar with RPI’s financial aid office, that RPI will usually give out more money if you are strong by RPI’s numbers (i.e RPI is pretty much a safety and you feel like you didnt “barely” get accepted). Even if RPI says no, my dad was told to keep pushing RPI and keep pushing. Make sure you tell them specifically how much you need and to be courteous, but firm. If you are set on RPI with more money, make sure RPI knows that- they will find a way to give you more money. Good luck!

Uhh… this amount really didn’t make me feel I should turn down UIUC for RPI… (electrical engineering)

Son got $12,600 leadership award plus loans. SAT was 780 math, 660 cr, 580 writing. ACT 32. Our EFC was $46,100, so it looks like they were trying to bridge the gap.

In terms of petitioning, would it help to mention FA offers from other colleges?

Yes. Depends on the school though; for example, RPI wouldn’t match an offer from a SUNY. Would have to be on RPI’s level or higher.

I realize that RPI goes by the CSS Profile, not just FAFSA, but—

S’s EFC is 5K, but RPI expects us to pay 25K, and that already includes loans in the fin. aid package.

We are geing gapped big time.

Our financial situation hasn’t changed in years, and older sisters attended private schools (URochester, Mt Holyoke) for less than 10K per year out of pocket.
