I’m a bit confused right now, so back then in community college, I was offered financial aid and me and my parents some part of the tuition. Now going to a university they are not offering me any aid, and I’ve contacted the FA office at the university to investigate and they said my family income is too high. But, why was aid offered at the community college and not the university?
What aid was offered to you at the community college?
What is your family income?
@thumper1 I was offered pell and state grants, I have college bound. My family income is around 50k.
How much Pell were you offered? With $50,000 in income, I would not think it was the full amount.
Did you submit your FAFSA on time? Ho much has your income increased?
@thumper1 I don’t remember how much because it was a while back. I did pay a couple of thousands.
Yes, I did complete my FAFSA on time, and our family’s income roughly stayed the same. I also did not commit any fraud or fail any course.
Is that family income of $50,000 before or,after taxes?
It IS possible, that your total, family income is too high to receive a Pell Grant or state grants.
What state? And what is the income limit to receive that state grant?
@thumper1 Should be after taxes.
I am in Washington State and the income limit for a family of 5 that $69,000. This is why I’m so confused that I got rejected aid.
Perhaps for state aid, but not federal grant aid.
Check with the school’s financial aid office.
Recheck your FAFSA to make sure that you made no mistakes
Do your parents contribute to a pension, 401k/403b ? Those monies will taken out before taxes are added back in for financial aid purposes
If their after tax income is in the $50,000 range…is it possible, that their net income S higher than that? Are you sure about that income?
Usually the AGI (adjusted gross income) is what is used for state grant eligibility.
What was your FAFSA EFC?
@thumper1 How do I check my FAFSA EFC?
Log into your FAFSA account and look for your SAR (student aid report).
Do you have siblings?

Should be after taxes.

NO…FA is based on BEFORE taxes…the AGI.
What is your parents income BEFORE taxes?
And did you have a sibling in college when you went to college before?

You’re confusing state aid with fed aid. Wash State doesn’t determine Pell Grants. Pell is fed aid. Pell is based on EFC. It isn’t based on a set family income.
Sounds like your parents income BEFORE taxes exceeds that figure for state aid.
Do your parents contribute to a retirement account.
What is your FAFSA EFC?
Are you male and did you register for selective service after you turned 18?
Did the school say why you didn’t get aid? Is the university also in WA?
I agree with mom, if you had a sibling in college at the same time you attended CC your EFC would have been about half of what it is with only one in college.
@thumper1 my FAFSA EFC is 004561.
Ok…so that EFC gets a small Pell Grant…about 600 or so a semester. Did you get that?
(I didn’t look up the exact amount…just an estimated guess)
If you didn’t get that small Pell, then tell us how many semesters you’ve been in college.
@mom2collegekids I received Pell for the community college but not the university. I’ve been in college for 3 semesters.
You should be eligible for $1000 in Pell. Take your Fafsa to the financial aid office!
One more question…are you really a pharmacy student? If so, at some point in pharmacy studies, students are no longer considered undergrads. They are considered grad students. Grad students are not eligible for the Pell at all, and quite possibly aren’t eligible for your state grant either.
Were you admitted into a Pharm program or something? Are you a pharm student now or are you still an undergrad??
